Tonight my DH made bacon wrapped scallops.  Yummy!  We have pan seared scallops leftover.  I thought they would be good over some creamy polenta for dinner tomorrow.   Polenta is not listed in the yes or no  section of my diet from the surgeon.  Neither is grits.   What do you think?

Sounds very carb heavy. I do not think polenta has much nutritional value. It can be good tasing but in very small amounts. Karen

Different surgeons/different rules.... but our dates are close and I can tell you that on my list I think I can have anything except steak and nuts at this point.  But since I know I need to get at least 60grams of protein in a day, and should keep it low cal/low fat/low surger -- well, that's how I decide.  I just looked up polenta and its not very high in protein... not sure I would waste my pouch space on it.  But if you love it and pair it with other protein... have a little!

You had surgery 3 weeks ago and you want to eat polenta?  How about some cottage cheese or refried beans...avoid the pastas and the polentas till you are father out.

According to my surgeon, I can start transitioning to real food at 4 weeks.  That is today.  I've been eating refried beans and cottage cheese since day 7.  I'm looking to expand my protein choices so we tried scallops.  So far so good.  I can't have pasta for 1 year.  I thought polenta might be ok as a "vegetable" because it is a soft food, made from corn and high in calcium and iron.

Cornmeal isnt protein.   Any kind of seafood, shrimp, sashimi, fish, soft turkey(I get it from the Deli), I stay away from the "canned" meats.  Look at it this way...Whatever flys in the sky, walks on the earth or swims in the ocean is a protein.  Everything else is a carb.  If you want a vegetable...get some canned green beans...they are soft and will be easy for you do handle.  ...but corn is high in natural sugars...ie...high fructose corn syrup.  Corn is the last thing you should be eating.  When it breaks down, it creates gas when it ferments in the system.  b

Here is a good write up about the grain that is know as corn...

www.marksdailyapple.com/corn-is-not-a-vegetable/#axzz1lNqVUX 9z

in closing...corn is terrible for you...and kind of corn...polenta, corn syrup, corn dogs, ethynol...

I have to disagree.  There are plenty of non-animal sources of protein (beans, nuts, etc.)  I'm the mom of two vegans, and they are not protein deficient despite using NO animal products.

I looked up "Creamy Polenta" on myfitnesspal, and this is what it says:

1/4  cup cooked Creamy Polenta
84 calories
8g carbs
4g fat
4g protein
0 cholesterol
33g sodium
0g sugar
1g fiber

So it does have some protein, and NO sugars.

ETA: This is more protein and fewer carbs and sugar then the Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal that my nut approved for me.

Are you the mom of two Gastric Bypass patients who are 3 weeks off the table?

I'm the mom of two VEGANS who get plenty of protein from non-animal products. You claimed that there is no such thing as a non-animal protein. That was why I brought them into the post.  There's no need to be snarky.  I don't appreciate it.

I NEVER once claimed anything!!  Reread what I wrote...Though there may be "some" protein...they contain carbs.  There is NO carbs in animal proteins.  Read what people write...not what you think they are saying.

ps...you never answered me...are you the mom of 2 Gastric Bypass patients that are 3 weeks off the table...?  I don't want to assume...but just in case they are not..a regurlar non op patient absorbs things diffenetly than we do...so a 3 week postop should not be filling her tiny pouch with polenta because your kids are vegans.

I wouldn't be snarky if you wouldn't insist on passing bad info.

Oh.. My. God.  I didn't mention my daughters in the context of what an RnY patient should be eating.  I mentioned them in the context of disagreeing with your DIRECT STATMENT that there is NO PROTEIN in non-animal products.  And yes, you did say that. (Quote: "Whatever flys in the sky, walks on the earth or swims in the ocean is a protein.  Everything else is a carb.")

And MY nut approved of me eating Kashi cereal at 2 weeks post op, which is similar to polenta in protein, carbs, etc.  Just because YOUR nut doesn't approve carbs doesn't mean NONE do.

And I never said she could eat polenta just because my kids are vegans.  There were two unrelated subjects in my post.  I simply said MY nut approved a similar food.

Please apologize.

OMG is right...I say it again...In my sentence "everything else is carbs"...DID I SAY IT DIDN'T HAVE PROTEIN....IT HAS CARBS...BEANS HAVE CARBS, NUT HAVE CARBS, POLENTA HAS CARBS....SO GO REREAD MY SENTENCE....

What does what you daughter can eat have to do with a newly off the table post op asking about polenta...ARE YOU TRYING TO CONFUSE HER.  You said you were the mother of 2 vegans and they don't have protein deficiency....YOU BROUGHT UP YOUR KIDS...YOU BEING THE MOM OF 2 VEGANS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH US!

WE WERE NOT SPEAKING OF SIMILAR FOODS TO POLENTA...SHE NEVER ONCE ASKED ABOUT KASHI...

I won't apologize when you are passing bad information.  Wait till you get a little more experience under you belt..your 3 weeks off the table also...

Everything else IS CARBS, you said.  This implied that it has no protein, but IS CARBS.

And AGAIN, I brought up my daughters in response to what you said about protein, not in response to the question about polenta.

Please quote the bad information I passed.  I quoted the bad information you passed, that non-animal foods ARE CARBS.  This is simply not true.  You did not say that they contain carbs and protein.  You clearly stated that they ARE CARBS.

I have to ask, are you always this harsh and hostile?  I've seen you acti this way on at least one other thread.  What's up with that?  Hostility is not necessary.  It is possible to disagree with someone without belittling or demeaning them.

I was allowed to transition to real foods at one week out - but NO GRAINS for two months. Be sure to check your plan. I agree it's quite early to consider grains at this point. Once you are approved for grains, you really should only have whole grains, which polenta is not. It's usually prepared with a lot of butter, anyway. With that said, you are an adult and it's up to you to decide what and when you want to eat. I usually have a veggie as my side, and skip the starches. If I do want a starch, it's either quinoa or brown rice and in very small amounts.

Can you? Probably. should you? That depends on your philosophy and program plan.

Think of it like pasta, bread, rice, not like a vegetable. If you can/should/ would eat those things, go ahead with it. But like those things, always do protein first, and don't replace proteins with them.

At three weeks I didn't and am glad I didn't eat those things outside of trying a little here and there to understand what I was tolerating. At a year, I still don't eat many of them, but I like to enjoy all foods in moderation. I'm glad I spent my first six months building skills, tastes and recipes that would excite me in new ways, and were more bariatric food pyramid friendly.

Best,

Mo

Thanks.  You are right.  I do need to explore new meal options.  I didn't think of polenta as purely starch.  I wouldn't eat potatoes, rice or pasta so I won't try polenta either.  I would have eaten my 2 scallops first and probably only have had room for a taste of the other.  But, I'll pair them with a nice vegetable.  I am supposed to be eating 70% protein and 30% veggies now.  Oh well, I'll figure something yummy out.

Tonya, there are losts of yummy things you can make...go to the deli, get a roasted chicken or some deli chicken or turkey breast...put some hot sauce on it with a little blue cheese crumble...That is loaded with protein....

Sugar Free Jello cups with a ton of sf whipped cream.

Take some hard cheese..put it on a plate...I use paper plates because they are coated...I take shreeded parm or asiago or chedder..whatever I have in the house...stick it in the microwave and cook it till it gets bubbly ...let it harden a little and you have hot cheese chewys.

Some refried beens with cheeder a dolop of sour cream and some hot sauce and warm it up..yummy!!

Your highest level of protein is in the animal proteins...yes there is SOME protein in nuts(you can't eat now and they are good for a snack, not a meal replacement) Beans, but they can't be your only source....  and polenta and the girl above said you can eat at 3 weeks out...

Seafood is a great source..fish, shrimp....I eat the hell out of king crab claws...loaded with protein.

Not a very good choice so early out.  Too many carbs and too little protein at a time when you really need to be focusing on protein and finding new ways to integrate protein into your new eating style.  Later, sure.... A small amount as a side.
