A friend of mine just posted about having a stricture and people have told him he may need an EDG. I know that amounts to putting a tube down your throat with a camera on it. OK I am gagging just thinking about it. How is it normally done. Just ram it down your throat, put you to sleep, numb your throat etc. I just don't think I could stand that. Give me all the details if you would. Thanks

You go to sleep and wake up feeling like nothing happened. No pain, possibly mild throat dryness. Definitely nothing to worry about.

I had one last Wednesday.  They gave me Versad and all I remember after that is asking the doctor what he found (nothing).  I remember asking him questions about the size of my pouch and stoma while he was in there and I vaguely remember him telling me all was normal but no specifics.  I have no memory of any tubes coming near me or out of me.  I had no discomfort during or after the procedure and I felt perfectly normal immediately afterwards.  I wouldn't have known anything was done if you didn't tell me.

It's typically done under what is called "moderate sedation."  You are given fentanyl for pain and Versed for memory erasing.  Sometimes a lidocaine spray is used to numb the throat.

Once you are sedated, the procedure is performed.  You are awake enough to follow instructions, but really have no memory of it afterwards.

All I remember was waking up and telling my husband that they were about to take me back for the EGD. He kindly let me know that it was already done. Good drugs...I had propofol.

I had an EGD 11/2010 & it was painless. If anything, I was treated like a queen. I felt nothing. I remember the doctor coming into the room where the procedure was to be done. I made some joke & everyone on the staff laughed. Next thing I knew, I was back in the little curtained area where my husband was. Honestly, it was completely uneventful. The worst part was having to be there so early in the AM! I thought I would be having my surgery 1 year ago but I had major problems with Aetna. By moving heaven & earth (it feels like), I got the problems resolved. I have my GB surgery 2/28/2012, but I now have to repeat all the tests I had done in the fall of 2010 because it's been more than a year! Oh well. I have my second EGD this Monday. I have to be there at 6:45 AM so I'm going to bed now. (Just kidding)

Larrry,

Check out my new post. I was stuck and did not have a stricture. With that said it would have meant a tube down my throat if it had not cleared. I had ham for breakfast and think I went back to my old habit of not chewing. The doctor had me try meat tenderizer before going up and it worked. This was a good wake up call to pay attention.

Thanks for all the input. Does not sound that bad at all. And Bob, yes I read your comments and glad it is fine now. Chew Chew Chew. We are going to have to slap you around at the club if you do this again. :-)

They put in an IV for sedation.  They sprayed to numb my throat  I was out the entire procedure. I remember nothing about the procedure. When they woke me up and had me sit up on the edge of the bed so I would wake up and I could talk to the doctor I laid back down because he did not arrive right away and I was afraid I was going to do a face plant onto the floor. I slept on the drive home, ate lunch, went back to sleep, woke up when pizza delivery rang the door bell, ate a piece of pizza, went back to sleep, got up at 11 pm to go potty, slept through the night. It was truly the best rest I ever had.

My EGD was a nightmare--they sprayed my throat to numb it and gave me some meds to sedate me but I woke up and was gagging and choking through the whole thing. It was awful. I hope I never have to do another one ever again.
