Hello! My husband I are are both in the works for RNY through Tricare prime and were denied today. We started the process this past summer, were just about through with all of the other requirements, but Tricare decided on Jan 1 to require a 6 month doctor supervised diet and exercise program, thus the basis of the denial. This is the only thing holding us up. We want to appeal on the process that we meet all other requirements, over the BMI with comorbids, medical necessity, etc. Denying it this late in the game is unfair, as we would have been doing the Dr supervised stuff had we known about it. By going through it now, we would have to REPEAT all of the other stuff as it's only good for a year and we'd be past that, causing tricare to pay out for the services again.
Anyway, has anyone else dealt with this, win and if so what did you write to tricare that was successful?

Thanks for your help!!

I have Tri care prime and had my surgery on 1/16/12 without any problems at all. I was actually really surprised over how smoothly it went. I went to the meet the Dr seminar, got a referral through my PCP, which only took about a week to go through. Then I got my surgery date. The whole process maybe took a couple of months. Don't understand why they are giving you and your husband so much trouble. I hope they reconsider and approve your surgery. Don't give up! Robin.

Dang...I'm sorry.  I saw my PCP for the bloodwork, saw the surgeon a couple weeks later, and then was approved for the surgery 48 hours later, and had the surgery two weeks later.
Do you mind me asking; what is your BMI?   Mine was over 50 so Tricare automatically approves anyone with a BMI over 50.

I didn't have a problem with Tricare Prime but, i had my surgery literally on the border of when they changed the rules.  Another week and i would have probably had to prove that i had been on weigh****chers and stuff also and i had comidities also.  Tricare doesn't pay for Nutrition visits (at leas through civilian networks) though so be careful of that.  Have you called Tricare in your area and talked to anyone about this to find out exactly what you need to do this process?  I would definately do that first..  good luck and keep me updated plz..

The six month diet and exercise requirement was implemented in October 2011. I know this is frustrating for you, but I don't think there is any way around it.

I see your BMI is 39. Did you do any type of supervised diet within the last year such as weigh****chers?  You might also ask if any of your presurgery appointments can count toward your six month period.
