ANY KNOW OF ANY SAFE OVER THE COUNTER SLEEP MEDECINE.. for the last 3 weeks i have  not gotten much sleep(usually around 5 hrs a night) and its making me want to snack late at night(when i do its cheese and even thought it has 7g of protein per slice the calories add up) and since i have 2 little boys im unable to take naps during the day, not only that its making me cranky... my poor husband is fed up.. lol so he just ignores me...lol so im in california and its already 12 i will probably be up for an other 2 hours until my body its to tired to stay awake only to wake up at 7 and get my oldest ready for school and by then my youngest will be awake and  so my day begins.....

Melatonin. One half to one milligram would be an ok starting dose. Find it in the vitamin aisle at most grocery & drug stores. Some people also take benadryl, which is a common ingredient in most over the counter sleep aids, but it can make you feel hung over. If not working, go see your PCP, hormonal changes post op can really disrupt sleep cycles, and there is no shame in asking for a prescription to help you sleep. I'm chuckling a little cuz I'm working the night shift talking about sleep....go figure!!

Have you tried sleepy time tea? It is sold in most grocery stores, its an herbal tea not sure about caffeine.

 Hi

I'm not sure if you get a product called Rescue Remedy in the USA (Im in South Africa). They make a product called "Recue Night" which is a herbal remedy which contains Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum & White Chestnut. It seem to help. The product is made by Bach.

Good luck
I'm an insomniac as well, and its never fun :)

May I ask why you don't want to do a prescription medication? I have heard good things about Melatonin as another poster mentioned. I take Trazadone as needed and often only need 1/2 a dose and it really helps me sleep. Doc says it is nonhabit forming. So far she's right because I really don't feel compelled to take it unless I'm struggling getting to sleep.

I second the melatonin, but be aware that it is part of a process and works sooooo much better if you take it and then lie in a darkened room - don't expect it to work as well if you are sitting in front of the TV!!!!

I do think you need to carefully consider prescription meds if you are responsible for young children during the night - it's the main reason I put up with insomnia rather than medicate it!

I developed insomnia about 6 weeks post op.  My surgeon prescribed Ambien.  I only had to take it twice.  Have not needed it since.  Two doses were enough to get me back on schedule.

I didn't read the other responses, but Melatonin is my #1 go-to OTC sleep med. I've had insomnia my whole life.... AFTER RNY it become bad.... though now it's controlled with amitryptaline..... mostly (an anti-depressant)  but before I went on this I had issues... I would use benedryl (the sleep aide in Tylenol PM) or melatonin or ambien or ambien CR but now it's controlled by elevil (amitryptaline)
