HI All,
I have been reading for a while. I have 3 different drs. that have suggested the surgery, I have no support at home and any friends are not supportive as well. I had a surgery date for late April and canceled it. Know I am back in the same boat with the drs. asking me why haven't I had it done yet. I have been trying to loss going to weigh****chers for the past 5 years and working out with a personal trainer since July 3 days a week to have only gained 10 lbs. I am ready to cry because all the people that I know say I should be able to do it on my on. I also have pcos. aAny advise and should I keep tring the conventional way?

Heather

Hello Heather,

First off, this is your body! Secondly, this is your body!!

That being said and thought of first... What do you think? No family or friends can be you. They can either support you in what you would like for the betterment of you or you can find the supports you need else where. You are the best person to know what you want to do and what you feel or know you need. Sounds like you have the support of your doctor's already. That is sometimes a hard battle and much necessary one to be able to have the possibility of WLS.

You have to be the one to decide to do this for you. This is true for any person who feels any pressure to either not have the surgery or the persons that are being pushed to have the surgery.

Do your research, think about it (and it sounds like you have been thinking about it), and do what it is that you feel is right for you. If you have dieted and have not had the success with it... And for a number of years have not had success that can be tough to choke down. Be honest with yourself. Know that the WLS can make it easier in ways to lose the weight. It will still be a lot of work, but it can make it easier in ways. The long term keeping it off and finding what works for you will be what you will need to figure out with your new tool, if you go WLS. Everyone's bodies are different.

Do not allow any person to hold you back from what you beleive you need. I would think that people around you that care about you and love you truely would not want to see you in so much struggle. No one else can live your life! Go with what you feel is going to be for the betterment of yourself.

Lastly, this is your body!!

Hugs,
Sherrie

You've been trying the "conventional way" for five years and it hasn't worked for you yet?  Well, you can keep trying that way if you want.  What makes you think it will start working now, though, when it hasn't worked for five years?

You should not have surgery if you do not want to.  But if they reason you cancelled it was because some people you know (non-medical people) said you shouldn't need surgery, well, I would trust your doctors' opinions over theirs since they went to medical school and all.

The reason that I canceled is because I am afraid on the unknown. I am the kind of person that has a very hard time making big decisions. One day I can't wait and another I am back to being afraid.

 Hi Heather,

I am almost in the same spot you are. My husband does not want me to have the surgery, some of the nurses I work with do not want me to have the suregery, I haven't told many friends because I don't want to hear any more negitivity. ( Too dangerous, you should be able to lose on your own. Go to the gym) I'm sure you have heard it all, just like me.

I had the lapband surgery 6 yrs ago and have had problems with it all along. I am scheduled for lapband removal and revision to RNY on monday 2/13/12.  I hear " If the lapband didn't work, why do you think this will."

I am having this surgery for ME. This is what is right for ME.

The doctors I work with are very supportive. I went for my preop, saw the nurse practitioner and she was very supportive. I told someone from church last week and the response was they had gastric surgery 2 year ago. I went for my preop at the hospital yesterday and the nurse there had the RNY 2.5 yrs ago. She went from a size 24 to a size 8.

No one can say what is right for you. YOU have to decide this is the right decision for you.
I know I am making the right decision for me.

Betty, two weeks ago, I had my band removed and had RNY done. It is a completely different tool from the band and I've already lost almost 20 pounds. It works with your body in a different way. Geez, sometimes I want to jump through my computer and stuff sock into people's mouths.

Here is the bottom line for both you and Heather. You have to decide what's right for YOU. Screw what everyone else says. YOU are the one who will be living with whatever decision you make, not your friends or co-workers. Maybe it would be best to just not say anything else to anyone you know is against it. If they bring it up, it's very okay to say, "thank you for your opinion.". Then do whatever is right for you.

For anyone who thinks this surgery is the easy way out, they are very misinformed. It takes dedication and a lot of, hard work.

Heather, if you aren't already seeing a therapist, you might consider it. My feeling is your self esteem is very delicate so a therapist might be able to help you realize your worth. Ive been therapy continuously for the past 4 or so years and on and off many years prior to that. When I think that I may be wasting my time, all I have to do is reflect on how I was 20 years ago to see how far I've come. It makes me happy that I've stuck it out.

So for both of you, this is a great time to put yourselves first, value your opinions and start trusting yourselves.

Wishing you both the very best!

I'm very sorry that you don't have a good support system at home. I too have PCOS and was close to being type 2 diabetic at only 27 years old. I did the gym thing prior to surgery..and like you ended up gaining weight somehow..that was the last straw for me. I second guessed up until the hour before my surgery and my husband was there to remind me that I HAVE TRIED...EVERYTHING..and to remind me that with the surgery the PCOS should go away and that my chances of getting diabetes because of the PCOS were also going to be reduced..

It is absolutely a life style changing event..but I made the decision to be healthy and alive for my 3 children. I lost 14lbs 2 weeks before my surgery and have lost an additional 30 since my surgery on Dec. 30th..I already feel healthier, lighter, and I have more energy than I have since I was a teenager.

Best of luck to you and your family!

I would listen to your medical team.  For me, WLS means extending my life, and living a wonderful life where I can run and play with my grandkids.  I'm not a blob on the sofa anymore with Type 2 Diabetes, and a terrible need to stuff myself for comfort.  I felt that if I DIDN'T have the surgery, I would have been dead within five years from a stroke or heart attack. I'm off all of my meds!

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.  Good luck to you

I am in the same boat. I have no family where I live currently and I have not told my mother I plan on getting the surgery ( she is the only family i have and when i brougt it up to her a few months ago she was completely against it)..my friends are supportive but they lead busy lives so i'd still be on my own.

Here's what i realized:

NOBODY  has to live with my health but ME.  I want to be healthy so bad it kills me. During my last 3 trips to ER because of my out of control diabeties..i was ALONE.  so why would it be fair for me to take anyone elses considerations into account when it affects my health?

I backed out of surgery twice.

Since then i've been hospitalized 4 times. (all in the same year)

You do the math

I really hope you do what is best for YOU.  If you feel like you can do this on your own without wls we will support you ..if you choose wls..we wll still support you

Goodluck
