Ambien
I've been on ambien for several years and enjoyed every minuete of it. I'm being pressured to quit and am considering it due to recent studies and to prove I'm not addicted (I might be). Can you guys please share your experiences on quitting ambien and how you did it? All of your thoughts on this are welcome.
Is your doctor pressuring you to quit, friends, family, God, yourself?
I've been on Ambien for three years now (could be four). Without it I'm wide awake at 2-3 in the morning, then what little sleep I do manage to get is all interrupted. I can't function like that. It didn't change for me after surgery, and I elected to stay on the Ambien. Once in a while I get the "I did something and don't remember talking to you" thing, and have considered moving to Lunesta. So far I've stayed with the Ambien. I know I'm addicted. But - I really like sleeping.

As with most sleep aids that someone has been taking for a long time (yes, after so long, you very well may be addicted to it), it is best to taper off of it either by taking a smaller dose or taking it sporadically.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I tried tapering off but it was if I didn't take it at all. After a few days of misery I just went cold turkey. It took a week before I really got some sleep and another week before I was getting a good nights sleep. Now I use it when I really need it, like we are away from home or just can't settle down.

I took ambien for a few years and was very addicted. I had to manipulate my dose to get the same effects and I had withdrawals and even a seizure. It is NOT a medication to be messed with. Some people can take it or leave it, but it is VERY addictive and the numbers of people in this country struggling with addiction to ambien are climbing. Make sure you have a good relationship with your PCP and very carefully decrease or d/c ambien. Not everyone has troubles, but I surely did. Ambien almost killed me.
