Weight Loss Surgery Directory

Almost like I didn't have RNY, anyone else?

I would like to know if there is anybody out there *****ally did not get any side effects from having RNY surgery, meaning no real food problems. I hear so many stories about people who are so restricted with the food they can and cannot eat. I had RNY on 04/11/2012 and can eat just about anything. I have gone so far as to "test the waters" and found that even starchy foods and carbonated beverages don't bother me. No, I don't need a lecture on that; I am fully aware of right and wrong in this situation and am working to overcome those demons on a daily basis.

And for those of you out there who are planning surgery, this type of behavior certainly slows your weight loss down and will cause problems with weight gain after (or maybe even during) the honeymoon period. I am struggling right now to get back on track so that this does not happen to me.

Just wanting to hear from anyone else who has been in this situation what your progress is, how you may or may not have changed things, etc.

I definitely feel this way. I was discharged a day early, and was out clipping hedges the day after that. I went from being terrified I'd have massive complications to wondering if I needed an x-ray just to prove to myself that my body was different internally. It's been very strange. I haven't encountered anything that bothered me, though I haven't tested the waters so much, avoiding sugars and high-fat foods. A lot of things I anticipated giving me troubles because of how much they were mentioned, for example eggs, haven't caused me any discomfort at all. My biggest problem is reminding myself to eat (and staying on track with vitamins when I'm so busy during a move). It's definitely been interesting!

Due to a four-day drive across the country and settling in, I have gotten a bit off-track, I'm not eating as much protein, and have been eating some carbs: it stalled my weightloss. However, I've upped my proteins and gotten back on track with vitamins and went back to losing like crazy.
I came out of surgery feeling like little, if anything, had been done to me.  My only post surgical pain was from the air/gas they pumped me full of for surgery...that made my shoulders hurt.

But as far as everything else, I actually asked the dr if she was sure she had done the surgery.   I was able from the start to get my fluids in, then when I got home I was on soft foods so I pureed for about 10 days then was switched to regular food.   I;ve never had a problem with anything I've eaten and seem bo be able to eat/drink just about anything I want.

I do stay away from carbs and refined products as much as possible.  I'm happy without them...why mess whith a good thing, lol.

There are things I don;t eat, but it is because they no longer appeal to me since surgery...and things I eat now that I couldn;t imagine liking prior.

Yes,  I can relate.  I was hoping to be bothered by my food choices as well.  Bread does bother me but everything else.  Sodas, sugars, etc.  Not really.  However I will say if I eat TOO much sugar I feel gross.   Sicky kinda.   I am 8 months out but can eat anything I want as well.
I relate and am glad to not have problems with what I eat.   There are certain foods that I haven't been able to eat for years so it is nice to not have any new issues.

I always say that my surgeon just cut me & sewed me back up as an experiment.  I keep waiting for him to tell me that he really didnt do anything to my stomach it was just to test me - if I thought I had had the surgery would I loose weight!  LOL  I am able to eat anything, at any speed, & Im sure is more than a cup.  Yes this totally scares me & I have to really watch myself.  I asked my surgeon why is it so many people are affacted differantly, he had no answer - everyone is different!  Glad to see Im not the only one.  Im just scared...17 months out & already have to push the plate away because I can eat more then needed...

Starchy foods and carbonated beverages don't bother me.  The only thing that bothers me is too much sugar.  And small amounts of sugar are just fine.  That's actually quite common.  side effects of RNY, just like side effects of medications, are things that most people don't experience.

As far as how my progress has been, it's been good.  I am five pounds below my goal weight at 3.5 years out.  I make good food choices most of the time, though not always.  I've done a lot of emotional work, been in therapy since surgery (well, since before surgery, really).

I'm afraid to test the waters and find out I can eat anything.

As long as I live in fear of trying sweets, pop, etc & measure everything I eat - I figure I can keep on track.

I also had no symptoms and after 12 hours did not need the pain meds. I could eat or drink anything (except milk) and never felt pain or discomfort. No stuck feeling No fomies, No diareaha, no constipation, No puking No nausea, No dumping. I actually wanted to dump so I could use it as a deterent. so I ate some sticky sweet sugary pastry and waited. Nothing. Sooo that being said, watch out for testing the waters. You may find yourself stalled... The only negatives I got were Lactose intolerant (loved cold milk) and I might have RH now, not sure though. I admit to going a year without any vitamins and had my levels checked at 6 months and 1 year. all Levels were really good, told to keep doing what I was doing. But I decided not to pu**** and started the vitamins again. Anyway, I know what your saying. I went to surgery and all I got was this lousy scar LOL. No I got a good doctor and good surgery I just have an awsome body for taking care of me and a week constitution.
I get lactose intolerant from time to time.  It's strange how some days I can eat dairy and others I can't... I bought a box of the Lactase enzyme and just pop one prior to eating/drinking dairy.  I like that little bit of insurance!
I love my side effects! LOL... I WANT to dump and get sick if I don't eat like I am supposed to. I couldn't even tolerate pureed until about 2 months out.
