vitamin / mineral deficiency question

so at our last support group meeting @ the hospital i went to, we met with a rep from a vitamin company

she mentioned lots of vitamins / minerals, and some of the signs of deficiency..

i didn't even think about it then, but recently, my nails started peeling and splitting horizontally and having layers, if that makes sense? lol

what is this a sign of? i can't remember!!

also, when i google, it's a sign of everything from b2 to the apocalypse, so that's no help

Could be a lack of essential fatty acids in the diet.  Adding fish oil or flaxseed oil supplements might help.

Could also be lack of calcium, protein or vitamin A.

Total protein and albumin will be on your lab report, and those tell you if you're getting enough protein.  You want your total protein to be at least 7.0 and your albumin to be at least 4.0.

Vitamin A should be on your lab report but some docs don't check that unless you specifically ask for it.

There will be calcium level on your lab report but it doesn't actually tell you much about whether or not you're getting enough calcium.  If you had your PTH checked, if it's near the high end of the reference range, that suggests you aren't getting enough calcium.

Are you taking calcium citrate three or four times a day?

yep, i'm good on the calcium, ALTHOUGH for a short time (about a month to 6 weeks) i was completely NONcompliant with all my vitamins.. that was a few months ago.. could it just now be showing up? i dunno

i'm not doing anything differently now than i've been doing all along (with the exception of that 6 week period when i was off the beam)

hmmmmm i wonder!

i will try and find my labs in my email and check them against those numbers - thanks again!

I doubt six weeks of not taking vitamins would cause a problem.  But if it is related to that, it should get better soon.
