Your doc should prescribe something for pain.  For those that have a little time before their surgery date, ask your doc for the prescriptions for pain meds and nausea meds ahead of time so you can get them filled and have them waiting for you at home.  That way you don't have to stop at the pharmacy on your way home from the hospital.

I was not in a lot of pain, no.  But I was uncomfortable.  I was prescribed Vicodin and it worked well for me.

My experience is that some people think it's very painful, and others don't.

I had my gallbladder out in 2001... and that was awful, the RNY was like cake in comparison. Rarely needed the pain meds. Still had some a year later that I used for a root canal.

But each person has a unique experience, so my "not at all" might be your "really awful"

A lot of people who thought RNY was VERY painful thought the GB was easy.

No rhyme or reason to it.

I don't recall pain in the hospital. Just nausea the first 24 hours.

I was not in pain, it was more uncomfortable then pain. They prescribed some pain medicine in liquid form. I I took it twice and it was mostly for me to sleep. It will be a couple of weeks before you can sleep on your side. But I agree with Kelly get it filled before surgery. I didn't and had to send my husband for it.

Also make sure you take a final dose of pain meds before leaving the hospital.  If you're still hooked up to the pain pump, push the button even if you don't feel much pain at the moment.  It will help you stay comfortable for the drive home.  If you're not on the pump anymore, ask for a dose of oral meds before you leave.

I remember my "moralistic" nurse *****fused to give me the pain meds recommended by my surgeon. The doc told me he'd give me a double dose for my 50 mile drive home. When the moralizing nurse gave me a single dose, I told her that doc said I should have two. She was going to argue, and hubby jumped in and said, "Aren't you required to do what the doctor orders?" and she didn't argue any more.

Hi Kelly

I am scheduled for RNY on Aug 27th and I got an email from someone on this site saying, don't have the RNY since you're not allowed any tylenol, advil or ibprophen or other NAID pain meds whereas with other surgeries, you can still use these as needed.  Are you aware of this? Always appreciate your opinions

Thanks
Alvina
 You may have Tylenol.

They were a bit confused. what they were talking about was NSAIDS - non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen, advil, aleve, motrin, etc.  RNY patients are advised not to use those due to the risk of ulcers.

However, Tylenol, or acetominophen, is not an NSAID.  We can use it.

Pain issues vary with patients. Some have higher tolerances to pain, some have none.  I used my pain pump for less than 4 hours after my surgery.  Took pain meds at home as a precaution, although I never felt any painful issues.  My doc has scripts for vicodin, using the liquid on most patients.  My prediction is you will not feel "fine like it never happened"! This is a major abdominal surgery.
You can have significant pain or minimal pain. It's good to be prepared. Do not feel bad if you need to take medicine..that's what it's there for.
There can also be significant gas pain from the doctor pumping in gas to perform the surgery. That can cause shoulder and abdominal pain. The best cure for gas pain is moving/walking.
Good luck,
Deb T.

I was given Lortab elixir because I can't swallow pills I took it twice a day the first couple of days home then only at bedtime for the rest of the week. I have the rest just sitting here. I had severe pain but I don't like the doped up feeling so that was enough to take the edge off. After a few days the pain became more of just an uncomfortable feeling.

My doc also gave me my prescriptions prior to the surgery to have them at home waiting.

I have not  had surgery yet, (in 2 weeks) but I was given prescription to fill for when i get home they gave  me Dilaudid liquid
Lucky! I had dilaudid while I was in the hospital for my gall bladder issues and for me it was the best pain killer I had ever had. Much better than morphine.
