Weight Loss Surgery Directory

Concerned

I am reading post after post about doctors needing patients to lose weight before the surgery and being on liquid diets. Mine has not asked me to do any of that didnt require me to do much of anything. I do see him next week but i will only haved 7 days left at that point till my surgery. Is there something wrong?
Nope.  Not all surgeons ask patients to lose weight before surgery.  Mine didn't.  Apparently yours does not feel you need to lose anything in order to make surgery safe.  And if he thinks you need to do a liquid diet, apparently he doesn't think you need to do it for more than seven days.  I was only told to do a liquid diet for five days pre op, and sometimes docs don't ask patients to do one at all.

Nope, some surgeons do not have you do a pre op diet, but your welcome to if you want :)
two protein drinks and a small meal is one iv seen alot, mine was Full liquid diet anything i could drink i could have, with in reason. low carb high protein :) i have ALSO seen just an over all low carb high protein regular diet used.
Every doctor has his/her own protocols. When you see your surgeon, you can ask about the liver reduction diet (liquid diet everyone is talking about).

My surgeon requires it, and since I've held my weight steady this past month, I need to do the two week liquid diet. If I had lost more weight, then it would only have been for a week.

Mine is 4 shakes/day and a large garden salad with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil for either lunch or dinner. In between, drink water, Crystal Light, SF Popsicles, SF Jello, zero calorie drinks, like Vitamin Water Zero, etc.
I had no liquid pre-diet either. Just the night before the morning of surgery I had to stop eating and drinking by 10 pm. I thought it was odd when I came on here and saw so many people having a liquid diet before hand as I didn't have to do that at all with rny

I was told by my first surgeon that he makes the decision based on the patient's weight so I when I was banded I only had to do the "clean out" two days prior to surgery.  My RNY surgeon had me drink two protein drinks and eat a salad with lean protein (no fattening dressing, cheese, etc.) for ten days before the clean out.  I was told this shrinks the liver and makes surgery less complicated for the surgeon as the main reason for the low fat/ low sugar preop diets.  Also, some insurance companies require that the patient to be on wt loss plan and show a percentage of loss  prior to authorizing surgery.

Thanks every one for helping to put my mind at ease!
Probably not.  My surgeon did not require any weight loss or a liquid pre-op diet.  Not all do.

My surgery is this wednesday, and i've been on my pre-op diet for 4 days now.....some surgeons require it and some dont.  You're one of the lucky ones if you dont

No.  Some doctors do not require pre-surgery weight loss or diets.  Mine did have us on a liquid diet for 2 weeks before surgery but he had no goal weight for us to lose.  in fact he didn't care if we lost weight at all.  He just wants us to do the liquid diet to shrink our livers.

my insurance required the loss rather than my doctor - apparently to prove I was committed to the process.

I didn't have a pre-op diet and I was also told post-op there was no need for protein drinks. Strange because in my NUT group talk everybody had difficulty eating chicken, pork and beef. All of which were the best sources for protein.
