5 Days Post-op

Hi, I had the RnY on Monday July 16 - just 5 days ago - I did great in the hospital - actually on morning 3 the surgeon came in and asked me if I wanted to go home - I was discharged by noon. The last day or so - I have experienced extreme nausea - I am not even sure if it is nausea - my stomach feels like it is rolling all the time. Water and ice chips are about the only thing that I can stomach - I am supposed to be on 3 protein shakes a day - I am doing good to get two down. I am not sick as in vomiting sick - but my stomach is gurgling so to say. Is this semi-normal? I know no case is the same - just would like to have some feedback. Thanks

The gurgling is very normal.  And it's not uncommon to have nausea in the beginning.

Are you getting enough fluid?  Even slight dehydration can cause nausea, which then makes it even harder to get liquids in.

If you are getting two protein shakes down, I think you're good on protein right now.

Did you get any meds for nausea?  If not, you can call your surgeon (someone should be oncall even though it's the weekend) and ask him to call in a script for you.

My RNY was on July 17.  I had no real issues in the hospital either.  The gas in the hospital wasn't horrible.  The gas pains I experience now is horrendous.  Gas X helps a bit.  My stomach is constantly gurgling and  my family can hear it across the room.  I am not nauseous but I make sure to sip things slowly because I don't want to vomit.  Hope this helps.

I am one month post-op. My stomach rolled nearly constantly in the days after and I also had diarrhea. It last about a week. Hope you feel better soon!

I experienced this also.  60-90 grams of protein is what is required.  So, if you are getting in 2 30g shakes you are doing ok.  You may want to try some different protein.  Some sources digest better than others.  You may also want to try warm protein like unjury chicken soup or hot cocoa.  The simethocone helped me.  You may need to take it 3-4 times a day.  I am 7 months out now and still take it.  The girggleing is rough.  I sounded like a roaring lion at times.  It will get better though.  Congratulations on your surgery.
