7 months out - How much " a cup or even 2 cups per meal?

If you are 7 months out or more how much should you be eating? I can't find my nut info and I'm wondering how much I should be eating. I eat tons of different beams, veggie salads, fruits and meats.

Today I had almost 2 cups total of an edamame salad and chicken salad. The 2 cups included the yummiest cantaloupe too. Is 2 cups total for a meal way too much?

My doc had us on half-cup meals up to 6 months out, and working our way up to full-cup meals by 18 months.

Sounds like a lot of food.

I only barely started getting "full" signals from my pouch from 6 months to 9 months out, andd I had to step back what I was eating to 1/3rd of a cup for a while

How do we measure a cup or 1/2 cup of food? Are people putting all of their food in a measuring cup amd then putting it on a plate? I eyeball what I think I can eat and then eat until I'm full - but I've wondered each time I've read it how people know they are eating 1/2 cup or a cup.

I never measured anything.  My surgeon's info included approximate sizes of various portions (e.g., 3 oz of beef/chicken/etc. is about the size of a deck of cards, one ounce is about the size of a golfball, a cup is about the size of a baseball, etc.)  so I utilized that and just followed the protein first rule and then added bites of side dishes until I felt full.

Thanks, Lora! I guess people must be estimating the portion size on their plates to determine if they are eating a cup or 1/2 cup or more. I follow the same guidelines you do: I eat protein first, take bites of veggie side dishes and stop when I'm full. I don't know how much I'm eating, except if I put my piece of fish on the scale first, I guess. I track my food with my fitness pal and have to guess sometimes on there, but oh well.

As far as the original post, I don't know! I'm just barely 3 months out from my surgery and I ate just under 3 oz of salmon for lunch with a few bites of tomato today. And haven't been hungry since (but did eat some protein ice cream this evening).
I know the volume of all the dishes I use.

For a very long time, I prepared most of my meals in eight ounce ramekins. I knew if they were full it was a c, half full, half cup. I have measures the volume of my bowls, and usually eyeball salad ingredients, and use a scale for meat/fish.

Starting BMI 69 w comorbidities | 55 of the weight lost above was pre-op.
I had a hard time judging the quantity of my food. I purchased 8 oz kiddie bowls from Walmart and use those to measure my food. I put my veggie on the bottom and my meat on top.
After 6 months, I was allowed to have 3/4 cup and can increase to 1 cup after a year.

At that point I was supposed to be eating 3/4 cup to one cup.  Two cups does sound like kind of a lot to me.  Now, I may have been eating more than one cup of salad then.  I currently eat about one cup, sometimes one and a half, depending on the food, and I can eat at least two cups of salad, probably more sometimes, because lettuce is mostly water, you know.

But what's important is how much you are supposed to be eating.  If you aren't sure about your plan, call your surgeon or dietician.

 HI Kelly,

Just a quick question about cup portion size: do you measure each cup of food out to know how much you are eating? I'm just curious because I'm not sure of my cup size here - I don't put my meal in a 1/2 cup or 1 cup measuring cup to know. Besides doing that or eyeballing it like Lora said, how will I know how many cups I'm eating?

Thank you!!!

Most of the time I measure, yeah.  Now, if I'm at a restaurant, I don't carry  my measuring cup with me, so then I estimate how much I'm eating.  But I have learned I am not really that good at estimating and it's easy for me to eat a little too much and end up feeling sick if I don't measure.

Thanks so much. I am eating like Lora eating the protein then sides til I get my little signal that says that's enough. But I feel like I may be eating too much fruit, it chews down to nothing and seems like I can eat more of it. I am loving watermelon, nectarines, strawberries and melon during these hot days. May be eating a cup of them. I feel fine but that could be why I'm stalling these days.

I am going to measure today and see what I'm eating? I thought a cup to two cups were fine but apparently I need to dial it back a bit.

You are all so wonderful to share- THANKS

At 7 months on my plan I am to have 3 oz of protein 3 times a day and up to 1/2 cup veggies and 1/2 cup of fruit per day. Protein first of course. I added the veggies at 2 months and will be adding the fruit at 3 months.

I'm of the opinion that just because you *can* eat that much, it's  probably best to *not*.  I'm only 3 1/2 months out and I can only eat about 1/2 cup of food at a time.  I could probably eat more, but I stop myself because I don't want to make a habit of over-eating -- which got me fat in the first place.  I find I am content with half a cup and don't need more than that.

Mrs Litch thats the protein the a cup combined veggies and fruit? That is what it seems that I have been doing!!!
I am about 9.5 months out and I eat around 3/4 of a cup of food. I measure my food. sometimes I feel like I can eat more (I usually don't) and sometimes I can't eat the whole 3/4 of a cup. but that is me and all pouches are not the same!

I have to watch the watermelon and cantaloupe.  If I eat those with my meal, no matter what protien I eat I can always eat way more than I really should.  I try to eyeball what a cup is and I weigh my meats, to help gauge.  Now I avoid the melons unless they are a separate, measured, planned snack with a protien.
honestly, all plans are so different. i'm to eat 1-1/2 cups of food at a time. and honestly, i can usually do it. BUT, i don't eat very dense food. i don't eat meat and my protein choices don't sit super heavy.

i'm following my NUT's plan and am always under 1200 calories a day (even though they want me up at 1500, so i guess i'm not following it with the calories lol).

but fruits, salads, etc, don't take up a ton of room once they are chewed down.

i weigh with a measuring cup, or know what a measurement is in the dish i use (from measuring a lot)

I do measure all my food. Im supposed to be eating 2 oz at every meal. That's what my plan is with my surgeon and my nut. So I bought snack containers, that are 2 oz each and I just put my food in there. That's what I eat. And everyone's plan is different, cause the girls that I had surgery with, they're plan had them on 3/4 of a cup, and another girl is up to 1 cup. They are all taller than me, and I guess need more. Idk. But my nut wants me to stay on 1/4. So that's what I've been doing. Granted, I have days when I want a bit more, so I usually eat a couple of almonds (3-4) and I'm good. I do carry a small container that is 1/4 cup and I will measure my food, always. I also bought a small scale, so I will sometimes just weigh out the 2 oz if I can put it in the container. Sounds like a lot to do, but it keeps me in check and it's what works for me.
I'm not saying its what everyone needs to do. This is just what I do and so far it's helped me keep track of everything I eat. I've now been logging everything that goes in my mouth for over a year and i want to keep doing just that, cause it helps me to physically see what I've been eating and how much.
