Am I over eating?

I am 4 years out and sometimes I open a can of green beans,  (almost 15 ounces, servings 3.5 )
add a touch of margerine, heat and eat the whole amount.

And a do the same with cans of fruit, minus the heat and margerine of course, a can of peaches in lite syrup...and I rinse them, hoping more syrup washes off, ...15 oz...servings 3.5

I don`t always eat the whole can, sometimes it is split into 2 servings, but there are times I do eat all of it.
Am I overeating?????
Thank You in advance
I need to get back to the board on a regular basis .........

I'm guessing you couldnt eat that volume of dense meat. I notice an endless pouch with the softer wetter non meat items. Only from personal experience I'm guessing the fruits and veggies (canned) are just sliding right thru.
No thoughts on if you're overeating, as im only 4 mos out, but my experiences above sounded similar.
Never thought of it that way...definitely no way could I eat a 15 oz. steak, I can barely eat 4 oz.
Thanks for that tidbit of info:

Thanks! Glad I could help , I dont know what I would have done without all of you vets while I was going thru my 6 month program!
The only way to know if you are overeating I would suppose is if you feel discomfort.  Are you asking if 15 oz too big of a serving for a RNY patient then again I would have to say it is individual.  It sounds like you are getting hungry and trying to make choices that aren't too high in calories so you can get more volume.  I used to do the same thing.  I have no idea if this is good for you or not.  If you are concerned about the size of your pouch you might want to make an appointment with your surgeon and have an EGD done to check the size of your pouch and stoma to make sure they are within normal limits for someone who is 4 years out.  If you are worried you could always try to eat less and see if you are still satisfied.  Some foods are easier to get more of because they contain a lot of water so even though the volume may look large once chewed down there isn't a lot there, like lettuce.  I was worried early out because I could eat 2 cups of lettuce until I realized that 2 cups of lettuce was mostly water (and air) and didn't take up much room.
Are you able to eat 16 oz of denser foods like beans or meat?  That, to me, would be more concerning.
Like I said, it may be the problem is that you feel bad because you still want to eat larger volumes.  I think that is normal.  Even now when I look at my small serving of food I don't believe it will satisfy me.  I give myself to have seconds if needed but most of the time I can hardly even finish the first serving.  It's just our mind playing tricks on us.  If a can of green beans satisfies you and your surgeon doesn't think it's doing any hard then don't worry about it.

All my posts are just other people's opinions that I've stolen from other boards.

I'm 5 years out and I could totally eat a can of green beans in one sitting.

But I cannot possibly fit more than 4oz of steak in my pouch. No way. I suspect you're probably the same.

This is the reason why protein first is so important. For those of us who're further out especially, we can easily fatten up on slider foods like any "normal" person.
I eat the veggies or the fruit as a snack..........I don`t see these types of slider foods putting on weight....

Depends on the calories, obviously. Mashed potatoes and pie would be more fattening, but the concept is the same. It's still not putting protein first which is a bad habit to create. It's also a very common manipulation of the surgery to eat all the soft foods you want first and then eat your protein.
These are probably slider foods tor you. Get back to the basics-protein first and no eating and drinking. Good luck

Yep, at 5 years out, I can still only eat about 4 ounces of dense protein like beef but I can eat a LOT of things like green beans, chow mein vegetables, watermelon, etc.  it is all about density and "sliders".  I have not actually tried eating a whole can of green beans, but I am pretty sure I could do it.  Somewhat strangely, one container of Greek yogurt makes me very full.  I guess it is because it is so thick that it drips through the stoma slowly.

My surgeon told me that the intestine can hold a ton more then the stomach ever could.... so if these very moist items are sliding right through the pouch they are probably just going straight to the intestine. This is also why they don't want you to drink fluids while you eat... because it just pushes it straight through you.

Many years post op most people can eat a full restaraunte meal if they try. I know I can eat and drink anything I want in any quantity because I abused the the tool of surgery and streatched the pouch and I wash things down.

If you think you are eating too much you probably are.
FoodAbuser, if these slide right pas tmy puch , does that mean i am not getting any nutrients from them?

I called my surgeon and he said 15 oz of canned peaches or green beans are not too much as they are moist and he considers them more of a slider food.
I ALWAYS get my protein in, I eat these as snacks and most days I DO NOT eat the whole can.     I was just curious , but know I realize 15 oz of peaches is not  the same as 15 oz of steak.

4 years out and have not gained, however it has been about 6 months since i started the whole can thing, most of the time i add 1/2 the can to cottage cheese.
I guess I am doing just fine , from all your answers and mostly from my surgeon.

And I can not eat a full restaurant meal, when I order I ask to have 1/2 to go , so when my plate arrives I only half the 1/2 on it.
