Zombie 5K yesterday, followed by a serious binge

Holy cow. That run yesterday was amazing. So much fun! And so challenging!

This was no ordinary 5K. The whole thing took place through these winding woods.  There was a row of six 4' walls to hurdle over, alternated with low-ducks.  Then there was a shock house--a little building with windows cut into the side. You climb into the windows and weave your way through dozens of electrified coiled wires hanging from the ceiling.  There was a mud pit so deep and slippery, you just had to dig your fingers into the mud walls and pull yourself out, it was impossible to climb.  Huge fallen trees, rocky creek beds, steep, almost virtical riverbanks you had to climb down into...  it was fierce.  And then every so often, you'd run through a pack of zombies who would try to grab "life" ribbons off your belt. I managed to hang onto my last ribbon until 20 feet from the finish line, which was a low crawl under wooden beams in the mud, and then through a giant mud pit under an electrified fence.

Good times.

Anyway, super fun, and I totally plan to do it again next year.

I got home and just needed to eat. And eat and eat and eat. I had a bowl of Protein Plus cereal and a banana before I ran, and an Atkins bar afterward. I stopped at McDonald's on the 90 minute drive home and got a regular junior cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, and scarfed that down like it was nothing.

Arrived home and nuked a Lean Cuisine.
And then ate a string cheese stick.

And then took the kids to McAllister's and had a giant bowl of broccoli cheddar soup with 4 saltines (which gave me a rough 30 minutes of dumping, great)

I took a break on the noshing for a while, but then ended my day with another Atkins bar and a package of cream cheese and chive crackers.

I was at roughly 1830 calories yesterday, yowza. Granted, I know I burned enough to compensate and still have a deficit, but jeez. Feels like I just couldn't quit cramming my mouth.

Wow, that sounds like fun---or something close to it, lol! You done good, that's for sure!

And runners need calories and carbs (hubby is a runner) so I think you're fine on what you ate. Just have to remember to plan for stuff like that so that you don't let it get away from you.

Did you think a year ago you'd ever be running a Zombie 5K? Look at you!!

Y'know, I never saw myself as fat and unhealthy as I was, so this is something I would totally have signed up for, and then gotten my butt absolutely handed to me on a platter. It's nice that the body has finally caught up to where my mind always thought I was.

As for the "Or something close to it" comment (LOL!)  there was a guy who fell off one of the fallen tree obstacles.  It was this massive tree that had fallen across a deep riverbank, full of rocks. You could either crawl under it, or climb up and go over it.  (or you could cheat like I did, and climb the riverbank and go around)

Anyway, he tried to go over it and slipped and fell hard on his back on the dry creekbed. Someone stopped to help him up, and he commented, "Hey, it's okay, I paid good money to get the crap kicked out of me."

Bunch of masochists, I tell ya. ;)

First, congrats on the Zombie 5K! That sounds exceptionally grueling; I can't imagine how many calories you burned.
Second, I'm hoping you're not beating yourself up for eating. Did you feel like you were listening to what your body needed or did you feel like "I deserve to eat this much even if I don't need it"? I've noticed that I justify eating more carbs when I run longer distances, and it may be that I need a bit more but probably not as much as I'm justifying....

Oh, no, I'm not upset about it.  I know my body was probably freaking out and wanting as much as I could possibly give it, given my limited capacity. I definitely needed the calories.

It was just an interesting observation that I basically spent the entire day yesterday shoving food in my gob.  Felt nonstop. Like, as soon as I finished eating something, I'd go directly to something else. Felt like a pre-op again. And I have to say, it was not a comfortable feeling. It was not a sitatuion where I was thinking, "Oooh, I can eat just like I used to!"  Instead, I was thinking, "Omg, I'm hungry again. Am I damaging myself if I eat this?"

Ooooh, that does kinda sound like fun! Congrats on completing it.

As for the eating, that's happened to me before. Honestly, sometimes I think our body just needs some food. I dunno. At least that's what I say to myself.
I agree. I have bottomless pouch days occasionally.  This was more of a vacuum-pouch day.  it wasn't just bottomless, it was actually creating some kind of vortex from which any nearby food couldn't escape. ;)

Days when you push yourself hard you will eat more typically.  Heck you should have seen me eat yesterday.  Chips & dip, fruit , protein bars, corn on the cob, pork loin, granola bars. That's just he stuff I remember.

I
Like you I had an enjoyable race.....

Well except the swim part.

Congrats on finishing your race.  You now need to post a race report.

Oh lord, I didn't race to race. I didn't even check my time when I finished. I'm sure it's posted somewhere. I don't even know what a good time would be for an obstacle course mudrun, so I have no basis of comparison. I'm not sure if the average of 9 minute miles (or whatever it is) applies when you factor in zombie-dodging and tree-climbing.

[Edit to add] Okay, I just looked up my finished time. 1 hour, 8 minutes, 39 seconds. With three water stops and 8 obstacles, I'm not too displeased with that. I'm 5' tall, so even with a straight dry run on a track, it's going to take me longer to run a mile than it would a person with a longer stride.

I placed 3134 out of 4287. Meh. Not fabulous, but better than I'd expected.

Krykee Sheila!!!! (the word for girl/woman in Australia)  This sounds like something in the outback!   Holy Moly I am impressed!!!!!  When I was young and I mean young (I am 59) I would have been doing just what you are doing.  Be proud of yourself and keep up this physical activity as long as you can.  Proud of you!  Jane who watched the Crocodile Dundee movie a thousand times

Aw, thanks! It was so fun! There were a few obstacles where people would stop in front of it and gather for a minute, debating if the course designers were serious.

At the end, when low crawling under the electric fence, I got a shock on my butt, and I hollered, "Son of a !@#$, I thought they were kidding!" Teehee!  It was a good day.

I've done 5Ks before, but never a mudrun or an obstacle course, and certainly not both in one race. :D So exciting!

Charlie!! You are awesome, and I wouldn't worry about what you ate, you probably burned off twice that amount!

Thanks! And holy cow, look at you! 38 pounds to go!?  Wow, girl, way to rock it!!!   How are you feeling? Strictures all better?

Haha, when I started the race, those pant**** just below my knee. By the end, they were so heavy and sodden with water and mud they were ankle-length. All red faced and squinting into the sun...not the best photo ever. But it's not a pageant.

I think, after this run, a plain 5K would be rather boring. :D

O M Goodness!!! how much fun was THAT!?!?? Craziness!

After my Sunday morning triathlon training I have to tell my 110lb Labrador to stay away because I might grill him if he hangs around too long.... I feel like I am starving!
Yay for you.. I really want to do a mud run. Sounds like a blast and I'm SOOO proud of you for finishing
I saw the ads for the zombie run, but I'm not even 3 months out, so I decided to wait.  Maybe they'll have another one in STL next year so I can do it.
