Blood sugar 76 to 78 two hours after eating.....is this OK?

My blood sugar levels have been a little on the "lowish" side.  I am sometimes in the mid to upper 60s a few minutes after waking up.  Also, I usually run in the low 80s two hours after eating but sometimes as low as 76 to 78 two hours after eating.  Is this OK?  I am 3 1/2 years out of RNY.  Thank you!

If I'm not mistaken I believe under 70 is considered hypoglycemia.  I have seen my blood sugar as low as in the 30's.  How are you feeling when this happens?  I can always tell that my blood sugar is low by how I feel.  Thank God it has been stable for a while.

When it is in the upper 70s, I guess I feel "OK".  Hard to say lately because I've been so anxious, so today I've been feeling a little shaky from being so anxious.  I've made myself very anxious lately worrying about my blood sugar, which is counterproductive!  I think I feel better when they are in the 80s.  Thanks for your reply!

Speaking as a nurse, I can tell you that "normal" BS (what they teach you in nursing school) is 80-120. Your sugars seem a little low, but everyone is different. Are you having symptoms of low blood sugar? Sweaty/clammy, shaky, weak, nauseous? Maybe give your doc a call and check in about it. Can't hurt to talk to someone.

Thanks for your reply Rebecca!  I don't have the "heavy duty" symptoms of low blood sugar when my BS is in the upper 70s.  Just a little shaky, but I've been a little anxious the last few days so it is hard to say which it is from.  I do feel best when my BS is in the 80s.  I saw my surgeon yesterday.  All he said was don't eat too many carbs.  Big help!  LOL

Yeah, that doesn't seem like the most useful answer. Have you talked to your PCP? They can run a blood test called an A1C. It measures your blood sugar averages over the most recent 12 week period. It's a good indicator of overall trends and helps docs know what to proceed with next in the diagnostic process.

Other than that, I suggest going back to basic nutrition. Protein and complex (vegetable and whole grain based) carbs will give you a slow steady burn, which should help stabilize your BS. If it's very low in the mornings, you may need a little more complex carbs in the evenings. Do you eat much in the way of dairy or beans? As others have mentioned, those are good sources of complex carbs coupled with digestible proteins.

My PCP told me to monitor my blood sugars and come back in a couple of months. She did my A1c level last month. I was normal. I do have a snack before bed as I did read that it is a good idea for stabilizing morning blood sugar. I may have to experiment with what I eat for this snack. I have been testing a lot in the last couple of days to see how my blood sugar is affected by what I eat. I guess I'm in the learning stages again, even at 3 1/2 years out! I am concerned about eating too many carbs versus eating too little carbs. Thanks for your advice!

A1C isnt a really helpful test for hypoglycemia unless it is low - do you know what it was?  I know my A1C is 4.8 or 4.9 and my sugars are pretty much around 80 to 90 all the time but they do drop into the 70;s.  My Endocrinologist told me that 70's are fine unless I am symptomatic for low blood sugar.  For a diabetic, 60;s are too low but someone with normal blood sugar - upper 60;s and 70's are fine as long as you feel fine.

There are blood tests that can be done like C Peptide and insulin levels to check to see if your developing hypoglycemia.  The best way to treat it is with a high protein diet = as few carbs as possible, and if you are going to have any carbs - they must be with protein.  You also need to have a high protein snack in the evening and eat every 2 to 3 hours during your waking hours.  Exercise is good also, even if just walking every day.

It is best to see an Endocrinologist that is familiar with Gastric Bypass.  It is very common for us to develop this at 2 to 3 years post op.

Hi Rbb! I have not been on OH for awhile, but I remember you! You are always so helpful! My hemoglobin A1c last month was 5.0. I've been checking my blood sugar levels frequently over the past couple of days. Yesterday in particular, my levels were very good - 3-hour postprandial levels ranged from 73 to 82 and I felt good all day. I always eat every 3 hours like clockwork. Protein + carbs - fat. I find that moderate carb intake is working best for me. I tried lowering my crab intake I bit to see what would happen, and my levels went down. I'm 3 1/2 years out, and I think the hypoglycemia probably set in around the last year or so. I have a friend who is the manager of an endocrinology practice, so I can ask her which of their doctors have experience with gastric bypass patients. Thank you so much for your input!

Sounds like RH (Reactive Hypoglycemia).  You should talk to the dietitian at your surgeons office.  You will need to eat frequently and have protein each time as well as monitoring your blood sugar.

I have been monitoring frequently.  I eat every 3 hours..... always protein and fat with some good carbs.  I don't get the high spikes with crashes.  I just tend to run a little on the low side.

I was looking over my past glucose results and it seems that for about the last year my blood sugar levels have been consistently under 100, usually in the 70's and 80's, with one reading 68.  I never had any symptoms except when I started feeling very shaky and just strange, like disorientated and I would check my levels and they would be very low, in the 40's and 30's.  The last time was last May and since then I am careful to eat every few hours, always protein with some carbs and I have totally avoided refined carbs since my surgery.  Like I said, I haven't had an episode since May.

I agree with you. I do not ear refined carbs at all. No added sugar. No white stuff like pasta or white rice. Thank you for sharing your info! Fortunately, I've never gone down below the 60s.

A blood sugar of 70 is considered normal in the hospital that I work in. So, there would be no treatment for a blood sugar in the 70's. Even a blood sugar in the 60s would warrant only a glass of juice.

BS readings, fasting and 2-3 hours after eating,  in the high 70's are normal for me. I also run low blood pressure so maybe I am just lowly enlightened Not everyone falls into the same number category. If you are not spiking high after eating and then dropping low enough to get any of the symptoms associated with hypoglycemia, then it is probably your anxiety causing the problem.

You are doing the right thing by tracking your readings and food intake.

Hi Multimom! I haven't been on OH in awhile but I remember you! Thank you so much for your input. It is reassuring knowing 70s are not bad. The only time I really feel a bit "off" is when I first get up in the morning, and my BS is sometimes in the mid 60s at that time. Once I have my protein shake and drink lots of water, I feel better. I do think I've made myself quite anxious particularly over the past couple of days; hence feeling very shaky. I have been trying to experiment with different pre bedtime snacks to see what works best in terms of not waking up with low BS numbers. Since I've only been checking my blood sugar level for the past two weeks, and a lot in the past couple of days, I guess it is a learning process AND I need to calm down! LOL. Thanks again!

my fasting blood sugar now is 72. I had been hypoglycemic for 20 years and didn't feel any ill effects until I was in the 40s. how are you feeling two hours after eating? when my hypoglicemia turned to RH pre surgery I felt narcoleptic I couldn't do anything but sleep after eating carbs because of the rise and drop.

Thanks for your reply! In the last couple of weeks of checking my sugar levels at different times of the day, I haven't had any rise and drop. I just run in the 70s and low 80s most of the time and sometimes upper 60s when I wake up. I feel OK in the 70s but a little better in the 80s.

I don't think I'd worry too much then. If you are in the upper 60s or lower 70s and don't feel great eat something healthy to raise it a bit so you feel better. And I would just keep monitoring it. The 20 years of hypoglycemia I was able to control it completely with diet but it did take some trial and error to get it right. Once I figured it out it was pretty easy to maintain unless I skipped a meal.
