Wow. I was so speechless I couldn't even talk to the manager. I am still so shocked that ppl are so ignorant. We went to Golden Corral for breakfast this morning but of course I have the weight loss card saying I can only eat 3oz of food so I hand it over to the attendant and she gets on this speaker thing and basically say to the manager that we have a gastric card thing here how do I put it in the computer and its the wrong card. It was so loud and I was so shocked that the manager didn't even correct his employee. That's a HIPPA violation and please ppl this lady tried to tell me my card was wrong. We are in America and nobody can tell me that every bariactric doctor passes out the same card. Were is the common sense here.  I did email corporate and no I didn't eat at all.

Unless they are your health professional,  it is not a HIPAA violation!   The cards are a nonsense and restaurants are under no obligation to accept them - they are not a right.   I have never had one and even if I did, would chose not to use it - no one owes me anything!

I'll bet they didn't charge you extra when you ate as a MO person, so why should they give you a discount because you CHOSE weight loss surgery?

You won't want to hear this, but the truth is - your indignation is totally misplaced!

While I know restaurants are not obligated to honor the card...I use it. Often I go to buffets out of obligation and if I can get a few bucks off (because honestly there is no scenario where I'll eat as much as their per person calculations that dictate price say I will) I am damn sure gonna get it! No shame in that for me. I don't go in demanding that restaurants do it but even at six years out I give it a try! :)

I am sorry this woman working wasn't very sensitive by announcing your card status over the intercom/speaker -- I do think that is highly insensitive and inappropriate of her.  Certainly she could have handled that much better.  I am a very private person, so that would really upset me, too.

I do agree though that we aren't owed a cheaper rate simply because we eat less.  I have never used the card that my clinic gives because I am a very private person and I am unwilling to share my medical status with a complete stranger.  Instead, I usually order from an appetizer menu, share with my husband or drink a cup of decaf.  I definitely avoid buffet type restaurants… mostly because the food there is rarely very good or healthy and I resent paying for it.

Anyhow, I am sorry you felt embarrassed.

I assure you it is not a HIPAA violation. I think the restaurant cards are silly. Many people do not eat a full entree or much food at a time for a variety of reasons, and they do not expect special price breaks.

When I go out to eat, I order something something small. If I enjoy it enough to eat it again, I ask for a doggy bag. I don't make a fuss or demand special treatment or pricing.

Restaurants are in business to make money. Most will accomodate special requests, but you are essentially asking for a price break because you can't eat much.
