Here is the thing.  As you are all aware... you dont get a date until the end of this journey.... In the mean time you have to keep going on with your life and making plans. At Christmas i bought 1 Direction concert tickets for my daughter (BEST MOM EVER!!) and we have planning on going together just the two of us since then. (BTW if you dont know who 1D is... well, consider yourself lucky LOL)  Problem is that the concert is exactly 1 week post op and i'm not sure if ill be up for it... what are your thoughts on this?? I hate to try to go and then end up having to leave early or something. Do you think ill be OK to go?

Then i signed up for "Mudderella" on Sept 6th in Boston so I will be 5 weeks post op. Originally I thought i would be having surgery sooner and thought it would be a great goal to work towards but now im worried it may be a bit much at that stage in recovery. If my doc OKs it im gonna do it!! Do you think you felt good enought at 5 weeks post op to do something like this??

Both of these events have cost me a good chunk of change. Im cheap like that and dont want to just throw that money away so Im determined to do them. Am i being unrealistic?

Lisa (38) my goal is 160 lbs.... my dream is happy and healthy

One week out I could not attend my step daughter's school concert. I had trouble traipsing around with her for prom but I did it.  I wasn't even allowed to drive. 5 weeks for a run event, wow, you must be in pretty good shape to begin with. I would talk to your doctor about the run at 5 weeks. I was still on restrictions.

It is difficult to say.

It partly depends on your pain tolerance and your general health as well as what your surgeon recommends.

I had very little pain from surgery so I think I could have handled a concert 1 week out, but my wife had a bit more pain and probably would not have done well.

As for the mud run, well I was able to do whatever medically at 5 weeks out, but I am not sure I would have been up for a mud run.  I could have walked a 5k, but not sure about something involving obstacles and such.

Is there someone else that could take your daughter to the concert?

Could you sell the mud run ticket to someone else local?

Not saying you should bow out, but just be prepared with other plans if you have any issues.

At 1 wk post op, I felt fine physically (no pain), however I did tire easily.  I was napping about twice a day at that point. I don't know if I would have had the energy for an entire concert.  Everyone is different so you may need to judge how you feel when it happens.  As far as the 5k 5 weeks out, I don't know if I could run it, but certainly could walk it. In the end you'll have to determine based on your own experience, progress and how you feel, along with your doctor's input.  Good luck to you!

For the concert well that is going to be up to you and how you feel.  You may be fine or you may be still in to much pain to deal with it.

As for the mud run I highly doubt you will feel good enough to participate in something like that and I may be wrong, but I don't think your doctor is going to approve you to do it.  Those things take a lot of energy and I personally don't think anyone at 5 weeks post op should be doing something like that.

ON the mud run. I dont want to discourage you but it may not be realistic.  My experience has been a) I went to the gym and worked out hard BEFORE surgery b) had a flawless surgery and I was up and walking within minutes of waking ..I could walk a mile within hours of surgery (I noticed some bypass patients werent walking until the second or third day). BUT..in the weeks following surgery I felt FAINT if I did anything too strenous. I mean dizzy and the white sparkles covering the majority of my field of vision (aka I was really close to passing otu).  I almost passed out 7 times in ONE HOUR of "Gentle Yoga" class.

IN the first 3 months following surgery, all I could do was walk. Sad, I KNOW. HOwever, around month 5, I was back in the gym and bouncing around BETTER THAN ever (amazing how losing 30 lbs does that).

If your surgeon says "Sure." I cant argue with him. But I dont want you to set yourself up for disappointment. You will be running off of low calories, losing a lot of weight, and your blood pressure may be radically diffferent. You are physiologically different now and that change will be dramatic in the first few months after surgery and your body will still be learning how to adjust it to yourself.

So. If you can-DO. But dont have any unrealistic expectations for your stamina and performance.

I don't think your doc will OK a mud run at just five weeks out.  I was not supposed to be doing anything more strenuous than walking for six weeks.

You might feel like going to a concert but you might not.

Hey there!  I would think the concert would be debatable.  You may tire easily, but I probably could have done it (with a nap before), and knowing I had somewhere to sit.  I am two weeks out and feel like I could conquer the world.  I have to physically hold myself back because mentally I feel great.  However, with that being said, I was told we could not even work out heavily until 6-8 weeks post op.  I wanted to swim some laps but will not even do that until that point.  I have just been walking more and more each day. You may be healed on the outside, and feel OK, but you have lots of internal stitches that could cause major damage and setbacks if something were to tear.  I'd tell my friends I was in for next year, or for the spring, and bow out.  I just don't think it's worth the risk.  But that's just me.  Talk to the doc and see what they say :)
