What about caloric malabsorption

Anybody have any info on how long after RNY sugery is malabsorption of calories no longer working to help with weight loss?  I had my RNY 9 months ago and have lost 90 pounds so far and have a goal to lose 50-70 more.  Also, I kind of feel like others loss weight a lot faster than I have and I wonder should I be concerned.  I moved to another state shortly after my surgery and although I have access to medical care and have gotten check ups (including an emergency gall bladder removal 8 weeks ago, OMG) I have not seen a nutritionist or bariatric doctor since my first 2 post of checks.  Any info or feedback would be appreciated.  I am a new poster here but I have been reading posts on this site for months.  You have ALL done so great and are truly my inspiration.

I think you always malabsorb to some extent. It sounds like the question you are really asking is about slowing of weight loss. From what I understand, most people lose the most the first 6 months. But many continue to lose steadily for 1 1/2 to 2 years. How come you haven't seen doc or nutritionist for so long? Do you have a support group. I think you just need feedback to keep you going. Also if you are keeping a food and exercise diary you could show that to the nutritionist and get feedback. There is a post on here everyday 'what are you eating today RNYers?' reading that may help you see what others are doing. Good Luck!

I agree with the other two posters. First, I would make sure that you are recording everything that you eat ( I use myfitnesspal) will really help you decide if you need to make any adjustments.

also your weight loss seems to be right in line. You sound like you are doing great!

You will malabsorb vitamins and minerals for life, but caloric malabsorption starts to disappear, gradually, right after surgery. It's not like you have it one day and it's gone the next. The most frequent rule of thumb is that it is gone entirely by the end of year two.

There is a lot of disagreement about caloric malabsorption. My surgeon emphasized that it is usually exaggerated, by a lot. Some say that fat is malabsorbed a fair amount, and carbs almost not at all.

There isn't a lot of consensus on malabsorption.

My surgeon said it lasts forever but diminishes over time.
