Most of us were swallowing pills before left the hosptal. You can swallow them.

From what I remember, I wasn't told NOT to crush my PPI ( Omeprazole ), but I had no problems taking it whole. I actually never crushed any of my meds. ( I did use a chewable multi for a few months, but switched over to pill form. )
Here's an older thread on the subject. Maybe do a search to find out some better info?

My doctor never advised me to crush any meds. And the ASMBS says it's fine to swallow pills whole as soon as you can tolerate it. I was able to tolerate it about 12 hours after my RNY.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
I never crushed a single pill and took my normal two prescription meds (both aspirin sized pills or smaller) the morning after my surgery. Unless your stoma is extremely swollen (which my surgeon said is rare) it isn't necessary.
