Ferrous sulfate can give you an upset stomach and will constipate you for sure. Carbonyl iron will not.

There are other ferrous salts, and all are constipating. Unless you are living in a brick house and planning an addition, I would stay away from ferrous sulfate.

Carbonyl.  It does not require much stomach acid for absorption and since it is all elemental iron, it is unlikely to cause constipation.

I was told carbonyl was preferred for the reasons that Kelly mentioned.

I take Proferrin - a heme that is very well used by the body and which causes NO side effects (for me) at all.   It is a lot more expensive than other forms though ...  $55.75 for 90 tablets

These are the product details:

Let's Iron This Out

Higher absorbency, fewer side effects and more convenience - that's what this iron supplement potentially provides.

Proferrin from Colorado Biolabs is a heme iron polypeptide, which is often used to address an iron deficiency.

Heme iron has been shown to have a much better absorption rate than non-heme iron supplements. Because of that, heme iron may also give you less of the common side effects from iron, such as stomach irritation and constipation.

Product Details:

  • Natural form of iron derived from animal sources
  • May cause fewer gastrointestinal side effects
  • Higher absorption rate: Increased serum iron up to 23 times greater than ferrous fumarate(1)*
  • Can be taken with or without meals

Supplement Facts:
1 tablet contains:
Iron 10.5mg (58%DV)
---(as Proferrin Heme Iron Polypeptide)
Other Ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, silicon dioxide, calcium stearate, povidone, and green coating (polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, talc, FD&C yellow #5 (aluminum lake), FD&C blue #2 (aluminum lake), titanium dioxide).

Recommended Use:
Adults: One tablet taken up to three times per day or as recommended by a healthcare professional.

Warning:
Accidental overdose of iron containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of the reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.

I was recommended ferrous fumarate by my physician, so that's what I take.

I had been taking it in a bariatriac multi, but then I switched up my vitamins so I now take it alone (I ordered it from Amazon here).

I take Ferrex 150 Forte (generic for Niferex).  I had been taking every day...but now only twice a week...as Ive been MAJORLY constipated.  2x a week is working out ok (I still take 3 colace a day just in case)....I'm hoping it's enough (my dr tends to think it will be)

Banded 12/18/08.  Band removed and revision to RNY on 12/15/14.

I remember reading a post a few months ago from someone who was having iron level issues.  S/he switched to Bariatric Advantage iron supplements and found success with that brand.
