Gastrparesis

I had Gastric Bypass surgery on 3/25/15. I was admitted into the hospital due to severe nausea, vomiting and dehydration on 4/27/15. Everything made me sick. I was diagnosed with gastroparesis and was wondering if anyone else had the same issue and if they are better now. How much time until I feel good and healthy and energetic? Or will I feel this way forever?  Thanks:)

I had gastroparesis before my RNY - and I still have it.  I get nauseated after every meal or snack of solid food.  It lasts 30-45 minutes.  I usually do not vomit.  I have learned to live with it.

I would think since you did not have it before surgery - you will probably get better.  Gastroparesis is digesting food slowly - a slowed down GI tract.

I'm wondering if you have constipation since your RNY - as that often happens with gastroparesis.  If it continues there are tests GI specialists can run tests for intestional motility and stomach emptying issues and some medications can be prescribed.  There are also prescription meds to help with the nausea, but I rarely take them.

I do get in a minimum of 130 ounces of fluid a day.  You have to get fluids in - try hot or lukewarm fluids instead of icy cold ones.  I have days when I can't eat solid food, or days when I can eat only one meal with solid food and I drink protein drinks (hot or cold) to supplement.  I always get my daily supplements (vitamins/minerals) in.

I would think your bariatric dietitian could also help you get your required nutrients in during this time.  I've had the most luck when I email them with specific questions and they are quick to respond.  Sometimes a phone call or in person visit needs to happen.

I'm 6 years post RNY.  Being at my goal weight and being healthy is so worth it.  I can take the "small discomforts I have" in stride as there is so much more worst problems to have.

Hope this smoothes out for you,

Penny

I had gastroparesis before my rny.  I had spaghetti in my stomach 15 hours after I had eaten it.   I really believe it was a side effect of my meds I took for diabetes.  Of course after surgery I don't takes the meds anymore so who knows if it was that or not or if surgery cured it.  It was the reason why I was switched from a sleeve to a rny.
