Just wondering..........

My NUT and Dr have both told me to take 2 children's Flintstone's  chewables  (multi vitamin) after my surgery, along with calcium citrate.

Just wondering what your thought are on the Flintstone vitamins?

That's exactly what my NUT told me.  The only difference is they want me to take the ones with Iron in them.  One in the morning, one at night, and calcium in the middle of the day.

My NUT had me start taking the Flintstone vitamins.  I take 2 a day.

I'm not an expert  but from what I've heard here on OH, Flintstones vitamins are seriously lacking in what you actually need.  I take a chewable vitamin formulated specifically for Bariatric patients, not small children.

I highly recommend finding a bariatric chewable that you like.  They are more expensive,  but will give you a more complete dose of vitamins.

Here is the information on what the Flintstones contain. Note that it's quite short of the standard adult RDA (for non-bariatric patients) in quite a few areas:

  • Insufficient A and K with 60 - 70% RDA; fat-soluble vitamins (A,D, E, and K) are particularly important for WLS patients.
  • Zero B12. We should be getting at least 350ug/day. Many folks take additional B12 supplements.
  • Not NEARLY enough iron. ASMBS guidelines suggest 40 - 65mg per day, these have 18.
  • D is a bit short, many folks have D3 issues. Recommendation is 400 - 800 IU per day, these have 600.
  • Niacin (B3) is also quite a bit short. Some people take a B-complex.

These are often recommended at first because they're chewable-- but most people are fine with regular pills right away if they're split into small pieces.

Generally speaking, you're MUCH better off taking a regular multi (like Centrum), either with iron included or as a separate supplement. They're cheaper, too.

would you give children adult vitamins? No,because they are too strong for them.

Pin the same way, children's vitamins don't have enough of what an adult needs. I wouldn't take them.

You won't find many, if any, vets taking Flinstones or bariatric vitamins.  Most of us take Centrum or a comparable generic.  I take a Kirkland Brand.

Most of us were swallowing pills before we left the hospital - I cut mine at first, now I chug them down.

Centrum is the one that has been recommended for me. I just started taking the Centrum Women. 5 days out of surgery and just breaking it in half.
