How long does digestion take?

I just want to know after RNY or MGB how long on average does it take your body to digest food you ate from the moment it enters your mouth and down the other end? I've calculated it for myself and it's takes me around 2.5-3 hours which shocked me!!! Not sure if that's normal or not and not sure if any absorption is happening!!!

the waste product that comes "out the end" is not what you just now ate. The digestion process can take a day to more than one day depending on the health, age and general condition of the person.

What comes out now,has been making its way thru the bowel and colon for awhile before it comes out the end.

I have not have any studies that go from 'end to end' but here is one that studied how long it takes for the stomach to empty after a liquid meal - they measure the level of D: -xylose that signifies that digesting has started.

Follow the link below - There is a graph that provides a good summary of this part of digestion.  Generally, the stomach emptys faster (it should, it is much smaller) and the short Small intestine I would thin, also emptys faster. So I would think the end to end time is much shortened.

Based on my own informal observations (what goes in must come out), my 'end to end' time is more at the 6 to 12 hour timeframe.  It probably is shorter for some foods.

Obes Surg. 2012 Aug; 22(8): 1263-1267.

RESULTS: Response to LIQUID meal, 150cm gbp

One year after GBP, subjects lost 45.0?±?9.7 kg and had a BMI of 27.1?±?4.7 kg/m(2). Gastric emptying was more rapid after GBP. The mean time to appearance of D: -xylose in serum decreased from 18.6?±?6.9 min prior to GBP to 7.9?±?2.7 min after GBP (p?=?0.006). There was no significant difference in absorption before (serum D: -xylose concentrations?=?35.6?±?12.6 mg/dL at 60 min and 33.9?±?9.1 mg/dL at 180 min) or 1 year after GBP (serum D: -xylose?=?31.5?±?18.1 mg/dL at 60 min and 27.2?±?11.9 mg/dL at 180 min).

Why did they not test for YY3-336 concentrations concurrently??

2.5 -3 hours means you have runs.  Not good.  Maybe something you eat - drink is upsetting your system? Milk?

Normal digestion takes 12-24 hours... Some people have 36... More than that - most docs think 48 is ok...but most naturopathic docs think 12 -24 is good.  If it takes more than 36-48 hours - that may indicated constipation... Less than 10-12 hours - can be gut irritation, or IBS-D. Or bacterial infection... Call the doc.

That has been my case since day 1.. Nothing that I eat can cause irritation or dumping syndrome and just to be on the safe side I am not drinking milk at all. Called my doctor and he assured me that's normal but I'm honestly questioning his integrity as a doctor. I have had another MGB patient who assured me that that's normal and will take some time to adjust and with her things went back to normal within 8 months. I worry about the absorption of my vitamins and minirals.. Will have to wait for atleast 6 months before I can get an appointment with another doctor. Not sure what I'm supposed to do during those 6 months.

You may have food allergies - intolerances. Some react like that to artificial sweeteners.  It can be bacteria or Candida overgrowth.  Or just simple food intolerance.

If I eat Food that my gut does not like or that I am allergic to - my gut can be "angry " for 2 -3 days after...even if I only had that food once.

I developed allergies to dairy - proteins. No whey , cheese , yogurt, etc for me.

Maybe you can see a gastro doc ? They may help.
