Guilty...I do snack between meals.  I am very active, so I burn many of the calories off.  I think I shared this about a year ago.  Thought we could get a thread going on what you eat or drink between meals.

Here are some of the items I use.  I will put into my pockets; plain nuts (walnuts, dry roasted peanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins, banana chips, plain Cheerios, rye crackers, soy nuts, beef jerky).  I keep some or all of these in my pockets at all times.  I also put all of these things in my car and truck.  During the summer they don't last as long.  But I just like the security blanket of having them there...If I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere.  Also if I feel my blood sugar level dropping, I'll just pop something in my mouth.  I also keep a can of chicken or beef vegetable soup (pop top lids) in the cars too.  I use to do protein bars, but they were expensive...Had quite a bit of sugar and would not do well during the heat of summer.

SO WHAT ITEMS DO YOU CARRY WITH YOU WHEN YOU TRAVEL??  Brian  PS  I know it sounds strange...But I keep in my pockets a B-Complex pill.  I nibble on it through out the day...It taste terrible...But I know I am getting those key Bs in throughout the day.

There is a thread like that...it's the daily menu thread. It's been going on for quite some time and is often one of the most active threads on the RNY board.

Why feel guilty? Some people's ( myself included ) plans call for 3 meals and 2 snacks...I don't think anyone who eats more than 3 times a day is doing anything wrong or is doing anything we should feel guilt over. I eat every 3-4 hours while I'm awake.

I'm too early out for any real need for snacking yet. I tend to rely on protein shakes at this point to make up what I can't get through meals. But I do a lot of traveling and road trips so I'm looking forward to seeing what people have found works well when you don't have access to a kitchen or fridge!

in the past, I've packed a cooler with sandwiches, fruit, veggies and hummus. But most of that won't really work for me now! I guess I could add meat and cheese roll ups and yogurt. Some almonds.

I don't think it is some thing to be guilty about. My surgeon recommends that I eat 6 times per day, every 3 hours or so.

When I'm showing houses on a Saturday, and I'm going to be out for hours on end, OR after my full time job in the evenings, I often eat 'snacks' instead of a real meal... Sunday, at my open house I had pork rinds and beef jerky for lunch LOL.

I carry around beef jerky, pork rinds, mixed nuts, and I think there's a protein bar in my car. I have pre-made Protein shakes in my satchel that I carry all my Realtor crap in.

I try to have good go-to things if I get hungry when I'm out.

Why on earth would you nibble on a B-complex all day long? There's just no point.

Maybe he just wanted to use the words nibble and complex in the same sentence?

Yeah, I know it sounds strange.  I just past my 10 year mark post op...All labs are good.  I think the thing that scared me the most was in about 2008 the local bariatric surgeon walked into the local support group and announced they had just discovered two cases of beriberi in RNY patients!!  The look on this doctor's face would best be described as scared and shaken...It freaked me out!  In 2006 when I had my surgery, they were still finding out new things about RNY.  Doctors were still guessing on how much of the small intestine to cut.  You had two RNY surgeries...Proximal and Distal, depending on how much was cut.  They were weighing the weight loss vs the malabsorption issues, trying to find the balance.  Also (at that time), the B-Complex was not on our list of vitamins to take.   So because of this I have tried to spread out my Bs throughout the day.  Also with the B Complex I will get in a small amount of B-12 in case I forget it that day.

I think an example you could compare this to is multivitamins.  Many people take one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  WHY??  Is there any sound reason for this?  Wouldn't taking two at the same time work out just the same??  No, because of malabsorption you want the nutrients to be working in your system though out the day.  Anyways...That's my thinking on that one.  Brian  PS  Another strange habit I had (not anymore), for the first 5 years of RNY I would have a spoonful of Wendy's Chili in the morning.  I wanted to make sure I was getting in my protein (beef/beans) and some fiber.  Also the beef/beans have iron and mixed with the vitamin C (tomatoes) help with my iron absorption.  Just some crazy habits we pick up...If they work for you (us)...Go with it...

Here's my favorite snack... put a layer of pepperonis on a napkin and microwave it for 2 mins. Out comes crunchy pepperonis!!! Put them in a baggie and take them along. I love dipping them into pimento cheese or tomato basil hummus (tastes like pizza). I bring it to parties and non WLS people love it too.

When going away for a day trip I always pack a lunch bag with an ice pack for water/drinks. I make up pre measured baggies of nuts, jerky , protein bars and if gone for a full day will bring a buddig 2 oz meat package with me or package cheese/salami or pepperoni.
