Grocery Preparation

Hello everyone!

My RNY is in 33 days...

I was wondering if you make your soups from scratch or purchase them already to go?

What would you recommend?

I know that protein is key but I am finding there are a lot of ingredients that may not be acceptable in the prepared soups.

What should I be looking for on the label?

ie. calories & other nutritional values.

What would you recommend as must haves?

Thank you!

Mahalo

I purchased and liked the single-serving packets of Unjury brand chicken broth found online at www.unjury.com.  One of my first solid meals was homemade chili because soup didn't seem to fit the rule of choosing a dense protein as well as chili did.  When looking at soup can labels, I shy away from noodles/rice and focus on meat/bean/vegetable ingredients.  My recommendations are Unjury chicken packets and then chili. Happy counting down from 33.

I made my own bone broth, you can get the recipes for that on Pinterest , I found the unjury way to salty and couldn't drink/eat them, you can add it to soup you make. I would but the Progresso's 100 calorie soups and throw them into my blender, as long as it can go through a sieve you can have it. My program didn't allow anything with tomatoes in it for 8 weeks because of the acidity.  Lots and Lots a Tropical sugar free popsicles!!

Before surgery, I bought some cartons of veggie broth, it's the only type I could handle the idea of sipping for some reason. But made my own soups.

everyone has a different opinion on this, but here's my two cents for what it's worth. I would suggest you avoid buying too much food in advance.Taste buds can change post op, and you're not laid up long post op generally.

Also, in my case, I was eating such small servings of food during those first couple of weeks (1-2 tablespoons to 1/4cup) I was ok eating things that were higher in carbohydrates than I was once I moved onto more solid food. I still have frozen soup in the freezer!

things I ate were:

cauliflower cheddar soup

black bean soup

red lentil soup

These are all soups you can buy too

mostly I just focused on drinking my protein shakes and water, with tiny meals to test my new stomach.

good luck, keep posting!

I'm not sure if you are thinking about soups for just those first few weeks postop, or for long term. The first 6 to 8 weeks of eating really are a different animal.

A good rule of thumb you should forever follow is 10 grams  of protein, minimum, for every 100 calories. If it has less than that, don't eat it.

Hello!

I want to begin with congratulations on your

successful weight loss WOW

Thanks for your suggestion.

Yes.  I was thinking soups for those first (3) months post op.

I was looking for healthy store bought choices for now and I am going to invest in a healthy soups recipe book for eating clean.

You have given me an idea of the nutritional values.

That is a great start.  Last but not least.

I imagine you probably get this all the time but how did you come up with your name?

Thanks again

Mahalo

I add unflavoured protein to my soups.  So protein level of the soup on it's own didn't matter so much.  I enjoyed tomato basil soup and cream of chicken.

Thank you!

Congratulations on your weight loss so far...

Great start...

I guess I am going to have to look for this unflavoured protein powder.

Thank you
