Need free labs? Have a stroke...

I hit the labwork jackpot.  Lots of data.  Now where do I go to see what normal for us (RnY) people is?

For example my iron level is 28, normal range is 28-170 ug/dL.  Seems low. Saturation is 8%, normsl is 15%- 50%  again, seems low.

I think I get what you meant here... but just so we are clear on what you are referring to, what specifically does it say for Hematocrit, Hemoglobin and Ferritin?

Well report says:

Iron:  your value 28. Standard range 28-170 ug/dL

Transferrin: your value 238 mg/dL, Standard range 179-321 mg/dL

TIBC:  your value 336 ug/dL, standard range 250-450 ug/dL

% saturation:  your value 8%, standard range 15-50%

Ferritin: your value 35.1 ng/dL, standard range 11.0-307.0'ng/dL

Hematocrit is on another lab, but is 35.3%, standard range 34.8-45.0%

Hemoglobin is also on another lab, but is 11.3 g/dL, standard range 11.5-15.0 g/dL

Thanks for responding.

Standard reference ranges are based on normal people with normal innards.  Post-RNY, we need to be militant about things like vitamins and iron, so I am happy you are looking into it.

Having said that, your crit and hemoglobin appear to be too low for a post-bypass patient, as is your total iron.  Your Ferritin, which is basically what your body has stored up to use later, is not awful yet, but if your levels continue to fall, the ferritin will fall too.  You are probably not low enough for an insurance company to approve iron prescription or infusions.  But I would recommend talking to your doctor about raising your iron supplementation if you haven't already.  Better to get on top of it now before things get bad.

Carbonyl iron is more easily absorbed and seems to cause the fewest gastrointestinal symptoms of all the forms out there.  I take the Feosol brand of Carbonyl but there are others.

I think your doc now knows you are serious when you ask for extra lab work!! Please don't use this method again.
