Anti-depressants and RNY

I am seeing my PCP tomorrow for depression. Is there a limit to what we can and cannot take? I tried calling my surgeons office but, as always, their after care sucks.

I dont see these meds as being long term but I do really need some intervention right now.

THanks!

I'm not sure about individual medicines, but I know several people on here are on anti-depressants, so at least *some* of them work for us!

I'm taking 20mg of Prozac daily and it really, really has helped me.

I have tried a few different ones since it can sometimes take a while to find the right combination. The only issue I have been told about through the bariatric process is to watch for extended release meds. They can move through our system too quickly and not be absorbed properly. One option is to space out your doses which I'm doing now as my med only comes in extended release. This allows you to get enough of the med throughout the day.

Hope that helps :)

If you get them - don't drink alcohol. There is a warning on most of them about no alcohol while on antidepressants. Make sure you take that seriously.  Antidepressants can change how your body processes the alcohol and even lead to alcohol dependency.

I don't drink at all, so thankfully that isn't a concern

Be aware that some anti-depressant medications have WEIGHT GAIN as a side effect.  Discuss this with your doctor or Psychiatrist.

Yes they do! I've been on prozac for a good 6-8 months now and have gained a good 20 pounds... so not happy about that. It is a constant battle

I started taking Cymbalta last week and so far no issues.  I already feel better than I did.  Goodluck!

The most important thing to watch out for is that you can't take "extended-release" format medications after RNY, and several meds have that as an option. (Basically you can take one pill a day, instead of needing multiple doses throughout the course of the day.) They'll have something like "XL" or "XR" in the name, and you'd just need to make sure you take the regular formulation.
