Hi forum!

In preparation for upcoming RNY, I am starting to take Biotin to help with the hair loss.

do you have any other recommendations for treatments or shampoos/conditioners that worked for you post-RNY?

Google telogen effluvium. Shampoos and conditioners are not really helpful, and biotin may lead to hair growth on your face.

The only thing that will help is time. Regrowth starts about 3 months after hairloss starts.

Biotin only helps if you are deficient in Biotin, which is rare. If you build up excess Biotin, you'll need to pick up extra razors, because you'll be growing hair everywhere except on the top of your head.

You'll hear lots of different perspectives on this, but the reality is there's nothing you can do. No product to make hair grow faster.

there are people on the board who can explain it better but:

Hair loss is common following major surgery. It has to do with anesthesia. When it gets to the point that your hair is falling out(3-4 months post op), the thing causing it to fall is actually the new growth. Those hairs were dead they day you had surgery.

So people saying that their new growth appreared a couple of weeks after using x shampoo aren't wrong, but it's just a coincidence.  Nothing to do with any product. Biotin or otherwise.

My advice is Save your money and ride it out.

I have been trying to find information about this too!  So I will be following.  My hair used to be thick but has thinned so much (at least on my head) from PCOS.  I am afraid between PCOS and my upcoming surgery I will be bald!!

My doctor told me it probably wouldn't work but said it wouldn't hurt anything, so I started taking Biotin immediately after my RNY. I don't know if it's the reason, but I am 7-1/2 months post-op, and have had no hair loss. It's worth a try!

I started using biotin/collagen shampoo and taking extra biotin 6 months pre-op. Like clockwork at the end of my 3rd month post-p I started losing hair by the handful. After 2 months the hair loss inexplicably stopped.  I seriously doubt anything I did would have changed anything!

I agree with the one comment-- ride it out.

Took biotin for 4 months before surgery and religiously afterwards.  It was great shaving my chin...

Still lost hair right on cue -- about 3.5 months after surgery.

I tried expensive vitamins for hair and nails and scalp massage.   It didn't stop it.

I also used very expensive shampoos -- Nioxin and the corresponding conditioner.  I use ridiculously overpriced Living Proof now.

You know what helped with hair loss?  Time.

It passes -- we all (most of us) get through it.
