Is it the taste, consistency, sweetness, or liquid-ness that is the problem? I would recommend calling your clinic to see if there is an alternative for you. They may let you do Slimtime, Carnation Breakfast, or a protein shake if you can't handle the opti, but that would really depend on why opti isn't working for you.

I didn't love the smell of the opti so I used a cup with a lid to hide the smell a bit while I was drinking it.

Don't give up!! You've come so far in the process, and you only have a few days left!! :)

What if you blended it with ice and ate it like soft serve ice cream? Have chewing gum ready to go as soon as you are done to get the taste out of your mouth?

And don't stress about the protein shakes. I went through the Guelph clinic and I didn't have to drink a single protein shake after surgery. Also, not sure if you know, but there is an Ontario forum. We have a much different process here so it can be helpful to read and post there :)

Feel free to PM me if you want :) keep going, you're so close!!

Only your doctor can tell you if you'll be able to have your surgery. Call the surgeon's office.

You're going to have to drink some kind of protein shake for months after surgery... period.

While I didn't have to do Optifast, I did have to drink some pretty nasty protein shakes prior to, and after surgery...

So talk to your doctor about it, but if you're psyching yourself out because you don't like the flavor, taste, or consistency, then you need to figure that out like right now.

As Pammieann stated, you better get used to protein shakes now. You are going to be drinking a lot of them. I did three weeks of nothing but shakes before my surgery. Then nothing bu****er the last two days.

Ask your doctors office if you can try other protein shakes. You need to find one you can tolerate - you might have to wait for surgery until you find one that you can take. Oh, and just so you know, your tastes change after surgery and what you may not like now you might like just fine after surgery. Or what you love now you may hate after surgery.

Before I started this journey, I absolutely detested the after taste of artificial sweeteners, now I hardly notice.

Hope you find something that works for you. Good Luck!

I had the same reaction to the Bariatric Advantage shakes my surgeon made me buy. They were nasty but I plugged my nose and got them down since I had already paid for them. Immediately after my surgery they said I had to buy more. I refused and told them they had to give me another option. I was told I could have Slim Fast High Protein shakes. I was able to handle them much better.

Call you surgeon's office and ask for an alternative.

I just want to throw it out there, that I have NEVER had a protein shake or bar.

You absolutely can have surgery without them. It's harder work and commitment, but wholly possible!

There are lots of us who don't, we just don't usually post on protein shake or bar threads.

I agree with you. But,

She's in the Canadian system, and I'm pretty sure they require not just shakes, but the Optifast brand. I have no idea if they will have any flexibility, and I think that's what the OP is worried about.

If it was me, I'd find another brand of shake, and not tell my center. Sorry -- centre.
