Looking for Someone Who Has Had a Complete Reversal or Knows of a Surgeon Who Does...

Hello All,

After such a long time of trying to figure out why I was having so many issues, being lied to and misled by surgeon and GI specialists as Vanderbilt, I finally know the truth -- my surgeon butchered me basically. I discovered 8/4/17 through an Upper EGD done by an independent GI specialist that he believed I had only 1 cm of gastric pouch tissue not capable of holding any amount of liquid or solid material. I attempted multiple times to contact the surgeon, no call backs. The program director stated "all three surgeons make the gastric pouch the size of an average man's thumb, capable of holding 1/2 to 1 oz." His op report was just a generic report except it said he created "a nice 1cm pouch." How is this the size of a man''s thumb? Anyway, long story short, I found an excellent surgeon in California who basically does revisions for a living. He looked over all my records and believed he could revise the bypass to a DS. My surgery was scheduled for 10/13/17.

After raising the money to fly down to California from Tennessee, hotel room etc, the day before surgery he wanted to do an Upper EGD just to see everything with his own eyes prior to opening me up. After seeing things, he cancelled my surgery. I don't even have 1 cm of gastric pouch, none of the hookups are normal, there was no anastomosis-- right after pouch was entered, the small bowel was noted immediately. He could barely see the rim of the gastric pouch through multiple attempts at retraction. He said the only way to fix this is he is going to have to cut into my chest wall, and pull down my esophagus just to have enough tissue to work with in order to connect the tissue back to my blind stomach. That is to even get back to normal anatomy. His game plan was for me to come home, work with a nutritionist to drop 20 pounds to make the surgery somewhat safer so he has more room to work with, and get the dumping and and nausea symptoms under as much control as possible. As disappointing as it was to not be able to get fixed to be well, and the financial burden, at least we had a game plan.

However, I had only been back from California a week, my dad died unexpectedly, didn't even know he was sick. He had an blood clot break off and go to his brain, and died immediately, at least that's what we were told. On top of everything I've been dealing with health-wise, and unable to work like I need to be able to, the prospect of raising enough money to go back out to California seems highly unlikely at this moment. I don't really want to go to another surgeon, as I really love Dr. K. and feel he is the best, but I would like to see if there is anyone here that has had a complicated RNY reversal or knows of a highly skilled surgeon that does them closer to the Tennessee area. I have to explore all my options because I cannot live like this much longer. I apologize for the length of this post, just trying to explain everything. And of yeah, due to the state of Tennessee's lovely 1-yr of statue of limitations law on medical malpractice, every attorney I spoke with states there's nothing that can be done to him legally so he gets to walk away scott free to do this to someone else. i really want to stop the ******* from hurting someone else, but not sure what my options are. I need to worry about my health first, but he needs to have his hands chopped off so he cannot hurt another person. --Rant over--

Thanks guys--if you can point me to some highly skilled surgeons, I would greatly appreciate it!!

I don't have any concrete help or advice but I just wanted to say how horrified I was to read your experience. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this!

I will give you my surgeon's name. Dr. Mohshin Soliman out of St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO if you are looking to travel. I don't know if he can do your revision, but I will say that he is an excellent surgeon. Not just for me, but he did my grandmother's hernia repair. When he worked on her, the scans they did had not shown the damage of the hernias. Her entire abdominal muscle was just in shreds. He repaired Nine hernias and rebuilt her abdominal. Her down time wasn't bad and she's better than ever. He is a skilled surgeon with a great hospital. If you are looking around, it might not hurt just to call and ask.

I am so sorry for what your surgeon has done to you though. I hope you find some luck with getting things fixed.

There is the website to the hospital if you get interested in checking them out.

I would suggest you contact Dr Mitchell Roslin in New York. He is probably the best in the world.

I have found that doctors will work with you if you do not have the money to cover your treatments.

Did you get your surgery done at Lenox Hill? I didn't have Dr Roslin but I met him a couple of times as he checked in on me during recovery.

The general surgery team there is really impressive and I know Roslin is their leader.

I only know of him by reputation.

If you are as messed up as you say, I wouldn't let anyone other than Dr. K work on me. Don't shop around for alternatives or better prices. This kind of revision is extremely complicated and dangerous. You've seen what a crappy surgeon can do. Stick with the best. I know the money can be crazy, but this is your life you are dealing with,

don't know about surgeons, but I think you should speak to another lawyer.
According to a google search:

'This time period is known as the statute of limitations. In Tennessee, medical malpractice claims must be filed within one year of when the malpractice was discovered, but only up to three years after the incident occurred.'

Looks like your surgery was in 2015, and the discovery was this past summer, so you seem to be within the guidelines to file.

Looking into having RNY surgery at Vanderbilt. Who was your surgeon? I am apprehensive about this surgery. Hope you find relief by a reversal to your issues ??
