Just curious about your sugar experience

I couldn't say for certain and I'm not too interested in finding out.

One thing I will say about eating sweets, it is absolutely about quality over quantity. And quality deserts don't necessarily need a ton of sugar to make them satisfying.

I agree about quality. I'd rather have one bite of amazing than 10 bites of nothing special.

Depending on how much sugar you take in can and will determine what will happen. For me i never had a real issue with dumping. But when i did decide to try sugar it gave me a bad case of diarrhea. The only time i have a dumping issue is i ate something to fast or ate to much in one bite.

If you havent had any sugar up to now - try hard not to have any sugar at all. I do regret trying sugary foods but do have my sugary cravings under control. Do I regret trying sugar? yes - since now i know that my body can tolerate it to a point i do go for that piece of cake or piece of candy that i know i shouldnt have. but once i do have that taste of sugar - im right back on track again and start going sugar free again like "normal"

I have had some sugar over the past year or so... I don't dump. (dumping = more violent reactions including diarrhea and puking, caused by carbs/sugars, and from what I understand, it happens pretty quickly after consuming the offending food/s)

I do however have Reactive Hypoglycemia from it, especially if I don't 'couple' the sugars/carbs with proteins. RH takes a little while for your body to show signs because you first have to spike your blood sugars up, and then it will crash, leaving you shaky, blurred vision, weak, and depending on how far yours falls, you can get speechless and/or pass out.

A few bites of sugar, at first, did nothing to me. As time goes on, it seems I'm getting more and more sensitive to carbs/sugars and the RH gets more frequent... oh, but maybe that's because when I was first losing, I was 90% compliant and didn't really eat much of those things, and for some reason the further out I get, the easier it is to go off course and head first into something I shouldn't have.... hmmmm

I was always afraid, thinking for sure I'd be in that 30% that does dump... I kinda wish I was, but from what I've seen on here, just because someone dumps doesn't mean they stop eating the offending foods... our brains are really mean beasts sometimes.

My advice for you is to abstain for as long as you can possibly talk yourself into it! Once that can of worms is open, it's open... and it's sometimes hard to close that ***** back up!

I totally get that just because someone dumps, doesn't mean they don't eat sugar, another worry of mine! I know it's not the same, but pre - op I couldn't tell you how many years I seriously overindulged in SF candy, namely Russell Stover chocolates and made myself sooooooo ill before I finally sayingenough, no more. I can't eat just 1 or 2.

Amen sister! This is so me. For the first year I didn't stray even a little bit. Like you said once the lid is off, it's tough to put it back on. I wish I dumped as more of a deterrent, but I don't and I still love sugar. Some say their taste changes after surgery, but mine did not. Sugar and carbs continue to be the demons I face. Like pammieanne said, I do seem to have more cases of RH - but it's usually from simple carbs (pretzels are a weakness and I will no longer buy the kind I like). My RH has not been severe so far - I get really hot (sweat down the back), shaky weak and it's usually about an hour or so after I've consumed the offending culprit. Others say RH often gets worse the further out from surgery you go. Maybe for me that's a good thing as it's a nasty feeling.

In the 4 years since my surgery, I have occasionally indulged in sugary treats and I am coming to the conclusion that it's just not worth it. I don't think I've had outright dumping, but it can make me very tired, which I guess is more of an RH thing. Also lately I get very gassy and uncomfortable and more often than not, the sugary treat either wasn't as good as I remembered or very tasty at all.

Kind of sad that it's taken me 4 years to figure this out, but better late than never, I guess! :D

That has been true about a lot of foods I used to love. They just aren't as good as I remembered!

I don't dump. I do have RH about 2 hours after and it can be brutal. like almost passing out in a store brutal.

usually i eat 'just' enough so I don't get sick but these are exceptions not the rule.

I was ill on thanskgiving. had cornbread stuffing and a couple bites of mac. needed to 'rest' after eating.

its not just sugar that does it, its carbs also

That makes sense about RH and non-sugar carbs. From what I have read from a few of you that I know have RH it sounds so crazy sudden and scary.

Do people dump on non-sugar carbs also?
