Soda stretch your pouch ?

hello everyone

I am 2 years post op for RNY. My BMI is 23.36 my weight approximately 182.

I was recently at an all day sporting event and instead of drinking water I drank Diet Coke all day which was a huge mistake. I almost always drink tea or water.

This is the most diet soda I have had since surgery. Now after I eat I do not feel as full as quickly and this was about 2 weeks ago. I normally weight about 178 and have gained about 4lbs since then. I have read online and through research that Soda may stretch the pouch after RNY and it should be avoided. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar experience? Or maybe it is all just in my head and a mental thing? My pouch feels the same after breakfast and lunch but I after dinner I do not feel as full as quickly. Is there anything I can do to try to shrink the size of my stomach. I hope this makes sense? Thanks for responding!!? Any advice greatly appreciated

It's impossible for soda to stretch your stomach. Just impossible. Whatever is responsible to your change in eating, it isn't that.

I've been drinking at least 2 liters of diet soda every day for the last 4 years, and nothing has stretched.

Likewise you cannot do anything to shrink your stomach. You CAN stretch it, by eating way too much dense food, every day, over time. But once stretched, nothing except surgery will make it smaller.

I agree with Grim that soda or other carbonated beverages won't stretch your stomach. That said, they don't agree with my stomach though. I used to love sparkling water and now I can't drink it. It makes things rumble and feel bloated. That is just me, however. Not true for everyone.

No. The carbonation is a gas meaning it will conform to the container (aka your pouch). If too much gets in there, you will belch

My experience with soda pop is it doesn't have the same appeal it used to because the carbonation gives an uncomfortable feeling. The only way I think you can shrink your pouch two years post-op is by having a surgical revision; a BMI at 23 gives you a slim chance for that. I have doubted the theory soda pop stretches out the pouch wondering if the WLS medical world says that it does to "scare" WLSers into breaking old habits. Don't you think they would prefer we drink copious amounts of healthy water over copious amount of not-so-healthy soda pop? This theory sounds like it has you unnecessarily worried you have blown it, too? I think you have not blown it, will go back to choosing the healthier choice of tea/water, and do fine. Congratulations on your successes and Best Wishes for many more.
