This was very well said, kitmouse. It makes me sad the OP is not willing to listen to your words but I know it will help others, though so thank you!!

This response...it is bang on and very well thought out. Thank you for providing a thorough, non-judgemental response, it was nice to see.

We live in a fallen world, things are not the Garden of Eden. I believe God gave knowledge to men to use it. Including the gifted Doctor's who have given me my life back so many times, not just Weight loss Surgery. As other's have said, it is not a moral failing.

If I had diabetes I would not consider a moral failing, I would get help. I suffered from obesity, and nothing I could do on my own could change that. So I got the help I needed.

I felt guilty about butchering a perfectly healthy body, too. I get where you're coming from but I hope that God can forgive me! Argh! 3 months post op now.

If you were "perfectly healthy," why did you get surgery?

Because I want to be even more perfect like you.

You have gotten good responses re your spiritual turmoil. Please accept my response to your last thought, "If I can't lose weight on my own and gastric bypass surgery is only a tool than where does that leave me." Gastric bypass surgery is the strongest tool the medical world has to offer. I took the giant leap of Faith to accept that help and find peace in knowing I gave normalcy my best shot. No regrets.

Ex-Christian atheist here.

I struggled with the idea of taking medication for my bipolar disorder before I deconverted. Did god mean for me to be suicidal? If so, god was a jerk for punishing me that way. (Many years later, the "god is a jerk" bit played heavily in my deconversion.)

I'm exceedingly glad I had no religious guilt in my decision to have WLS.

By your reasoning, no one should have surgery or any type of medical treatment, as that would be going against God's will. Heart valve problem? God's will. Auto immune disease? God's will. Morbidly obese? Yep, definitely God's will.

I personally think God/the Universe/the Celestial Actuary/the Big Giant Head, et al., helps those that help themselves, so I took my giant fat ass directly to a skilled surgeon.
