I was on Metformin, Glimeperide and insulin. My Highest A1c was 3 months prior to Surgery and was 11.2.

I am hoping I can keep my diabetes in remission as I do not want to return to medication, will try and remain diligent and the fear of diabetes is one of the main reasons why I am so active and exercise as religiously as I do.

I know that eventually genetics will play a part as diabetes runs on both sides of my family tree.

Having been diabetic for 20+ years prior to surgery, I agree with what the majority of people are saying here. Yes, the longer you were diabetic and the worse your A1c was before surgery, the smaller the chances of remission, because of long-term damage in the pancreas, especially since it takes a number of years of damage BEFORE you notice your blood sugars rising.

If your fasting BS are about 160, you need to either restart metformin or go to insulin. After my surgery, I was only doing insulin for the first few weeks and then added my metformin back into the mix. My fasting sugars are now about 70-90 and my post-prandial about 140-150 an hour after eating, which is still relatively good.

Pre surgery, my A1c was 5.4. I haven't had it tested since my surgery 2 months ago, but I would be willing to bet it went up, due to some uncontrolled blood sugars after surgery and then I had a post-surgical round of prednisone, which also increased your blood sugars (through the roof!).

My suggestion is to work with your endocrinologist. If you are being treated by JUST the PCP, maybe it is time to request a referral to the endocrine team.
