My surgery is Tuesday 2/20, I just want to know when I can take care of my son effectively drive him to school, etc. Also when could I go back to work I'm a nanny and housekeeper and my surgeon says everyone is different. Since I bend, twist a lot at my job I want to know a better time line then everyone is different ..

I was not comfortable/confident driving for 2 weeks. My kids were old encough to manage in their own for daily needs. I went back to my desk job after 3 weeks. I followed doctors orders and did not lift anything for six weeks. Bending, squatting etc was fine after 2 weeks for me- but it wore me out incredibly.

But really everyone is different, so you will get varying timelines.

actually, there is not a better time line than everyone is different because, everyone IS different.

You cant legally drive until you have been totally off narcotic pain medicine for 24 hours,

.

You likely won't be able to lift more than 10# for 4-6 weeks and my pain level st any point really had nothing to do with your pain level st any point.

i didn't have any trouble drinking enough to not get dehydrated but will you be able to do that? No one knows till you are post op.

Make sure your employer knows that you cannot lift anything for 6 weeks, o matter how well you are feeling. It dangerous to mess with internal stitches. If you are going back to work to do dishes, light housework and helping kids with homework, I can imagine going back at 2 weeks and just know you'll be exhausted for awhile when you get home. But if it is much more strenuous than that, and they don't have a back up, you should plan on taking a full month off.

Like picking up a vacuum cleaner and bringing it up the stairs? Thanks for your feedback.

I was living by myself when I had the RNY. 2 story house. With lifting limitations - I bought a second vacuum cleaner (cheap) and kept it upstairs. No lifting. Anything else- I woudl use common sense. i.e. instead of bringing a full basket of clothes upstairs - I made a few trips. Not only I had no problem with caring too much - but also had more exercise. Grocery shopping - upon entering the store I would ask if the store has a person who can help me loading groceries into my car. I would tell them that I had surgery and can't really bend that well. I never heard "no", even places like Costco or Sam's. bringing items home - I had a few extra bags and I made sure the bags were not too heavy. Think smart about tasks.

I think I was driving at about a week out from surgery. I took three weeks off from work, but I could have gone back after two. I was grateful for the extra time, though - I got tired very easily the first few weeks.

I drove 5 days after surgery. It is not just how you feel with the surgery healing - there is also the getting your fluids in and what ever food you are on... That is non negotiable it needs to happen, and there is a learning curve in a sense. Will you be able to take the time while nannying?
