Liquid Only - Principles???

So I'm one week into my 2 weeks smooth liquid only phase. So far so good.

What principles should I be following as a T2 Diabetic? I've had a couple of meal replacement shakes, but those feel kind of high in sugar to me...

I suppose my basic question is - should I aim for low carb, low fat, or neither?

I'm pretty well versed in low carb dieting, and did pretty well on a lchf diet for years.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Your surgeon or surgical program will be the best source of info, as all are different. My own program was low-carb/low-sugar for the liquids. Things included on my plan were sugar free pudding, jello, and popsicles, broth, "cream" soups (thinned and strained but tomato soup was not allowed because sugars are too high), V8 and yogurt. The yogurt had to be a low carb, high protein variety. And of course protein shakes. The shakes were normally less than 5 carbs per serving and 20-30g of protein. Pre-op I was eating less than 30 carbs per day on the liquids, and now, 6 days post op, I'm not even eating that much. Maybe 10-15 carbs.

Oh, a follow up clarification: my program also specified low-fat for the liquids (low fat soup, yogurt) but once we progress our diet they are ok with moderate fats

Oh and follow up with your doctor about how to adjust your diabetes meds for this diet. Mine had me reduce my meds by half, and go from there based on blood sugar readings.

Sorry for so so many follow up replies! Kept thinking of things to add :P

I'm not a diabetic, or a nutritionist, but my first inclination would be to ask your surgeon and/or nutritionist/dietician for advice about how to proceed. I'm surprised it wasn't addressed before you started.

Some shakes ARE pretty high in sugar. The Optifast I drank for 30 days for my pre-op liquid diet had something like 22 grams of sugar, I think. I'd been eating a low carb diet up to that point and it was weird for me to have that much sugar.

Are you having to drink a certain brand of shake? I'd bring up my concerns with your medical team about this.

I hope it all works out for you!

I've got guidance notes, that state that I should be low fat. But, as a diabetic, and one that does not have a huge amount of weight to lose, my primary motivator is to get my BG down. And, in the past, focussing on reducing carbs, and not so much fat, has given me the most success in that.

I swear by the Premier Protein brand shakes. I'm almost a year out and I'm still enjoying usually 1 per day. They have 30 grams of protein and are only 1 gram of sugar/160 cals.

Costco has the best price... $25 for 18

I'm 15 months out from RNY and former Type II diabetic. I drink 1-2 Premier Protein shakes a day. Costco has the best price. I stocked up when they were $5 off a case last month.

I like those too. Although no cost co close to me so I get mine at Sams. The 12 pack is $16.00 there. Not too terribly bad. What flavors have you tried? I'd like to try the caramel but don't want an entire case of them in case I don't like them. My husband likes the strawberry or banana and I like the chocolate or banana.

Check Wal-Mart as they sell four packs.
