Topic: RE: what was the hardest part of RNY for you?
Psychological adjustments. Things like people treating you differently for no reason than you are smaller. Enjoying being treated differently and yet angry about it. Adjusting to your new life style.

All the changes are great, there's just a lot of it!

I agree with Laura. You should contact your drs office re the pain and nausea as it is a new issue. Better to rule out an ulcer or stricture before it gets worse.

Walking or exercise helped me chase away the blues. There's a lot of exciting changes going on, but it's all just a bit much at times. And sometimes it does seem overwhelming to eat.

Hang in there. Go for a walk. And call your doctor.

Topic: RE: Three Adults - 390 Pounds Lost ~ Pictures!
Thank you, everyone!

Regarding photo ops, we are actually having a professional life story photographer join us for one day of our annual family weekend in October. More for ourselves than anything. The pictures in this post were just of the "century club"... My other two daughters and son add another 120 pounds lost for a combined weight loss of over 500 pounds. We are all very excited and enjoying the new opportunities open to us.

Our bariatric surgeon's program wants us to attend and present from the patients' perspective. I'm still on the fence regarding whether I'll do it or not.

Topic: RE: For people 300 lbs or over....
I weighed 317 at my first appointment. Lost 60 pounds in the six months before surgery and about 80 in the eight months since. It's been an amazing journey!

Topic: RE: Bread
When I eat bread (rarely) its only a bite or two of something whole grain and typically at a restaurant. After that I dissect it and only eat the protein part of half of the sandwich. I just can't handle breads. At home I will eat lf crackers.

Hubby buys hi protein whole grain breads and tolerates them well in moderation.

Arms and legs are the worst. The rest for me is fine. I think age is on your side . My daughter lost 120 pounds at 29 and has no loose skin.

Hubby and I had RNY last November and December.  He's lost 130, I've lost 140.  Our oldest daughter has lost 120 pounds through following basically the same diet and exercise as us.  In 14 months we have lost a collective 390 pounds!  Here we are posing this afternoon with our favorite "before" pants:

Topic: RE: What does everyone think of Quinoa?
I don't care for quinoa, and I dont tolerate or indulge in pastas much anymore. I have learned/found other foods that I enjoy.

Topic: RE: Any Bacon lovers out there?
Some things, I just rather have a small portion of the real deal than a lower cal/fat version. Bacon is one of them. One slice, extra crispy once every couple of weeks. However, I didn't eat bacon until I was 5 or 6 months post op.

Topic: RE: Foods I can never eat again?
I can eat just about anything i choose to eat. There are a lot of foods i choose to not eat. I avoid breads as they fill me up too quickly and I need the protein instead. I used to love pizza but now it's just not worth the bother. Your tastes will change.

I don't eat fried foods.

When I'm craving salty foods I eat a couple baby dill pickles. Works like a charm for me. Some people do not tolerate pickles. Thankfully I am not one of them.

Topic: RE: foamies
They are also a symptom of a stricture.

Either way, take your time, eat slowly and chew thoroughly. If you still get the foamies and/or throw up consistently, consult with your doctor.

Topic: RE: scope tomorrow
I had a stricure at 4 or 5 weeks post op. The EGD was relatively painless... Just the hassle of having it done. The results/benefits were immediate, although it took a good month for everything to heal up and be able to eat normal (for a gastric bypass individual).

Best of luck for both of you!

Topic: RE: Completely OT: I am in love.... With Siri
Looooove Siri! She's great entertainment for the grandkids when they get bored or restless. My favorite feature is asking her to remind me to do something when I leave or arrive at a location.

The app I use the most is instagram.

Topic: RE: Question regarding strictures!!??!!??
I hope it doesn't turn out to be a stricture for you. However, please know that the "cure" is not so bad! Typically, they dialate the opening via an EGD. You'll be alseep!

Topic: RE: Question regarding strictures!!??!!??
It's possible that you are experiencing swelling or irritation due to the shrimp, however, what you describe sounds very much like the beginnings of a stricture.

Either way, protein shakes or pureed until you see your dr is a good idea.

My husband and I both had RNY. His in November 2011 and mine in December 2011. It's been an amazing journey!

Topic: RE: 5 weeks out. Is this normal???
Like everyone has said, take small bites and eat slowly.... But if you do that, and STILL are experiencing the problems, definitely call your doctor again. It could be a stricture. I began having the same type of symptoms about five weeks out. Once the stricture was fixed, I felt like a new person.

Hang in there!

Topic: RE: Funny conversation at work...
My husband and I were both denied life insurance because of obesity, and his diabetes. When an opportunity came up at work to be a small policy, no questions asked, I jumped at it. I figure my odds are way better now.

And, I actually do know someone who died from WLS. His name was John Cashner from Watertown, Wisconsin. That was 30 years ago, he was in poor health, and procedures have definitely improved.

Topic: RE: STILL CAN'T EAT!!! ON DAY 21!!??
My nutritionist said what I was experiencing was normal too. My doctor scoped and fixed my stricture.

If you aren't able to tolerate the diet your program recommends, and are actually getting worse instead of better, call your doctor.

Topic: RE: I need an excuse for surgery....
I work at a college, a School of Nursing, to be specific. When I was preparing for my leave, I told my boss as we are close and didn't want her to worry about me. I sent an email to the other dept heads stating that the reason for my leave was personal and thanked them for respecting my privacy. My boss's only concern was that since 95% of my coworkers are nurses they would be naturally worried about me to which I retorted that they, of anyone, should understand the right to privacy.

My weight loss since surgery has been at a faster rate than presurgery, but slow enough that it hasn't been shocking. (I lost 62 pounds in the six months prior, and 50 in the four months since).

If people know, or suspect, they know better than to ask me... LOL

Topic: RE: OT - PTSD and being told my back shouldn't hurt this much
Kelly, your post makes perfect sense to me. I get it and am sorry that you have to deal with all that crap on top of the pain you are experiencing.

There are times I leave the doctors office (not RNY related) and feel just so... so... Enraged, sad, confused, pissed off.... Confused... For no "apparent" reason.

And all of that had nothing really to do with the ailment that brought me to the dr. I'm upset because I feel like that kid again that....

Hang in there! Insight is a good thing.

Topic: RE: Just 40 pounds in 4 months...
I agree you are doing great! You are making life changes that will keep the weight off. It is hard not to compare with others who seem to be doing "better". I'm nearly four months out, started heavier than you, and have only lost 50 pounds since surgery... And get discouraged too.

But we are doing great, and are losing a lot of weight, and will be successful. Keep up the good work, and you will get there!
