Topic: RE: Sugar free McDonald's iced coffee
I've ordered it black before and added my own Splenda and half and half. I like a strong coffee flavor, they put way too much cream. And my experience has been no two McDonalds taste the same.

Awesome what a difference. You look younger too, always liked that comment when someone said it to me. It's amazing how many years losing weight takes off of us!

Topic: RE: Wound healing? Hypoglycemic? Miserable! That's what it is!

Carbs will make your blood sugar rise then fall with hypoglycemia.  You need to eat protein and fats with carbs.  To bring it up when/if it drops protein/fat/carb combo seems to work pretty well.  I've only had it a handful of times but have found for me peanut butter crackers work quicker than anything else I've tried.   You do not want to eat sugar to raise it quick then you get in the high/low cycle.

Sorry about the MSRA, hope you can get a handle on that soon.

Topic: RE: Food question

Berries are the better fruits (glycemic wise) so it should be a better choice.  Try it at home first, just eat a small amount and see how you do with it.

Nuts are higher fat (good fat).  They may cause you some trouble this early out, proceed with caution.  I was eating raw veggies about 3 weeks out (broccoli, cucumbers, cauliflower, spinach) with no problem although the roughage causes some discomfort.

It's really trial and error to see what you can handle.

Topic: RE: Sugar free McDonald's iced coffee

I drink their Iced Coffee.  I don't care for the SF Vanilla it taste bitter to me.  This is how I order mine:

Iced Coffee

NO LIQUID SUGAR - yes it has liquid sugar in it

Add 2 SPLENDA

Light on Cream

I don't know what the calorie count is.  IMO they add entirely too much cream if I don't tell them to go light on the cream.

Topic: RE: What can be done after gastric bypass wears off?

What she means with wears off is the body is a smart vessel and the intestines regrow villa that you essentially didn't have in the portion of the intestines bypassed.  At around the 2 year mark (for some possibly before and others after) there is a high degree that malabsorption of food has ended.  YMMV

Once this happens the only thing we malabsorb is vitamins and minerals which we MUST take forever.  Yes you can continue to lose weight it just isn't as fast.

I'll also chime in with HALA.  If you are still considered morbidly obese then a revision may be your best choice to lose 100 lbs.  You can watch your intake and exercise which is MUCH easier than before WLS; however, I can understand how difficult and overwhelming it can be to say "I need to lose 100 lbs".

Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

Topic: RE: Moodiness and out of control!

When was your surgery?  Moodiness and crying seems to affect many in the early days.  Your body has gone (and continues to go) through a whole lot with surgery, recovery, eating chances, etc.  Hormones are stored in fat and as the fat is being released hormones can go haywire.

Know that it gets better.

Topic: RE: Pain when eating!!

He's probably waiting to see if liquids cause you too many problems.  Not being able to get liquids through could very well be a stricture.  An EDG would tell him if you have one.

Did you eat something different?  Anything get stuck?  Hopefully you just aggravated your pouch and it'll be better tomorrow.  Since it started yesterday (with no prior problems), I recommend a soft diet for a day or two and see how you feel.

Of course if the pain becomes serious, don't hesitate to go to the ER.

Topic: RE: Where do you get your vitamins?

I buy my multi, B-12, B-complex, B-6 (I was low add to add extra) at CVS, Kroger or where I can get them usually buy one get one free.  I buy my calcium, iron and vitamin D from Vitalady.  Occasionally, I'll buy Citrical Petite for my calcium locally but the ones I get from her has magnesium in them which helps me and they are capsule so easier to get in, for me.

She's recently lowered her shipping cost, which helps a lot.

Topic: RE: What is your favorite thing to eat after gastric bypass?

Cheese or anything with cheese.  I also like cottage cheese and eat it almost every day.  For dense protein my go to is usually chicken.

Topic: RE: Does this sound like an ulcer?
It could be an ulcer, contact your surgeon. There is a possibility of adhesions however no test will show them....it takes exploratory surgery to know for sure and if they are there the surgeon will take them down.

Also there is no guarantee you won't have them again, everyone has adhesions from surgeries not specific to WLS. The thing is some people have them worse than others...depending on how you heal. It's scar tissue if you heal quickly it seems one is more susceptible to a larger quantity.

What types of food are you eating? You may have developed lactose intolerance if you are eating or drinking milk products.

Definitely talk to your doctor.

Topic: RE: ER visit yesterday, had RNY May 13th
RNY is suppose to be the best surgery to cure reflux. I had a moderate case before surgery and no problems since. However. I've seen other newbies and vets complain of it recently. You did the best thing getting meds. I hope it resolves it for you.

Did you have it before surgery?

Topic: RE: Iron issues, could use some input

When I got my labs (and my iron was OK but trending downward) I had had infusions about 15 months prior my PCP wasn't concerned because my ferritin was in range.  I looked up providers on my insurance and made an appt to see a hematologist.  He looked at my labs and said yes I needed infusions at the time BEFORE it became deficient again.  There was definitely a trend downward and not slow either.

I did voice my concern to be sure it wouldn't be a problem with my insurance.  He didn't think so and said he was prepared to argue why he chose to do them now (FTR I had the past 5 years of labs printed out and gave to him).

I hope you can get in to see someone soon.  How do you feel?

Topic: RE: Iron issues, could use some input

That would kill my stomach.  Do you need a referral to a hematologist....get there STAT and bring copies of your labs.  A good hematologist will order iron infusions without a flinch.

Honestly I wonder about the medical community some days......why would they allow you to continue down this trail when it CONTINUES to drop.  You may never get your ferritin up on supplements alone and if you do it's going to take a LONG time and lots of exhausting days.

Topic: RE: Pregnant!

Congrats!  I also recommend reading the pregnancy board.  You also want to have your surgeon work with your OB/GYN on labs; you will need to eat a well-balanced diet and be sure to supplement appropriately.

Call and schedule labs soon, be sure to find out what your folate is and supplement as needed.

Topic: RE: Dr. Garth Davis' view on protein

It's actually a good thought.  For me I do believe more protein works best and keeps me satisfied longer; however, I don't worry near as much now if I'm eating a magic number in protein.  I try to get at least 70 grams (for no other reason than I want to) and I do try to eat more veggies and fruit.

I don't seem to eat much fruit though, although I like it it's usually my last choice after protein and veggies (which I love pretty much any veggie) and the space available for fruit just isn't there.

Like Kim said, I believe the 100 grams of protein is basically the thought that it's dense and will keep you full longer so you don't have room for excessive snacking or grazing.

Topic: RE: Mystery bruises..vitamin issue?

Vitamin K, E and iron deficiency anemia would be the ones I'd check for deficiencies.  Most surgeons do not have Vitamin E & K on their normal required draws, you will have to ASK or DEMAND these be pulled.  Both are oil based vitamins and although it's more common for DSers to need to supplement additionally with this it isn't totally uncommon for RNYers to need them too.
