Topic: RE: Plateau already? FRUSTRATING!
My experience has been the same also. Only lost 15# the first 3 weeks and nothing the last 2 weeks but I have dropped 2 shirt sizes and 1 pants size so I am losing inches. Hang in there!

How cool is that! Could also wear it on a charm bracelet.

Topic: RE: hoe long to stay out of work
I'm a nurse too. (In patient Hospice unit) I took 6 weeks off. My surgeon said no lifting anything over 10# for 6 wks.
I felt really tired the first 3 weeks. No umph! By the end of the 4th week I felt my energy and stamina coming back. These next 2 weeks I'll use to prepare for going back to work, meal planning etc. If you have a physical job I would highly recommend everyone take at least 6 wks. off if they can afford to. Even at 6 wks. we're still doing some healing on the inside.

Topic: RE: Frustrated, regretful, fearful, feeling early failure...
Hang in there girl! I'm 5 weeks out, have lost only 15# since surgery.  AND have been stalled for the past 2 weeks. BUT I've dropped 2 shirt sizes and 1 pants size so far. I also say....PUT THE SCALE AWAY! Weigh once a week only. (I know it's an easy thing to say and hard to do.) I also have trouble getting all the fluids in but I just keep sipping away. I keep a food journal of everything that goes into my mouth. Mostly at this point to make sure I'm getting all the protein and fluids I'm supposed to. I'm up to a soft diet right now. At 3 months out I progress to a regular diet. At that point I'll start logging the calories and carbs I take in.

Vitamins....having a hard time too. I ordered a bunch of chewables as instructed. I got Bariatric Advantage. I am getting them down but it's not a fun experience. I've started crushing all of them and mixing with some SF pudding. Seems to be a better taste then mixing with applesauce but it's still my least favorite thing to eat. Seems like I've eaten a whole meal by the time I'm finished. A vitamin meal. Yuck! Can't wait to start swallowing the pills whole again.

Constipation....I drink (2) double scoop protein shakes a day right now just to make sure I get 70-90 Gms. of protein in. I put 2 TBSP. of Benefiber in each and once a day I put 17Gms. of Miralax in one of them. Have been going every day but I'm going to have to add a stool softener to the schedule.

Meal size....I can only fit 2 oz. of anything in at one time.

Hydration....I do happen to like water at this point but I also drink crystal lite, some orange juice and milk.

I have no doubt that we will lose the weight. Try to look at where you will be one year down the road instead of next week. Remember what everyone says....IT'S A JOURNEY! And you're going to get there.

Topic: RE: Water on a new pouch
Hasn't happened to me but I did notice more belching after drinking water mainly because I was swallowing more by taking frequent little sips. We swallow air each time we swallow anything. Sometimes when I'm drinking plain water I just get the feeling that I need to stop and put something with more substance in my pouch. Even if it's changing to crystal lite.
The only thing I could add is tha****er is a thin liquid and goes down quite quickly.  The muscles from your mouth to your  stomach have to work together to allow you to safely swallow. Maybe they're a little off right now because of the surgery. Creamed soups, protein shakes, puddings slide down slower because of their consistency therefore allowing the muscles time to react.  Just a thought.

Joyce....exercising helps me too. Getting on the treadmill or out for a walk with my headphones on blocks out the world. For that period of time my mind gets a rest. Remember, this is a journey. We're all learning as we go along.

As for the other situation.....I can imagine how hurt and angry you are. And you're also grieving the loss of your parents. You may want to also schedule an appointment with an attorney to discuss the situation and what options there may be for you and your other siblings.

Wait for your own appt. Surgeons aren't the ones who get the process moving anyway. The office staff does.

Topic: RE: Eating Oatmeal and Carbs
Steel cut oats are not quick cooking. You have to bring your water or milk to a boil, add your oats and reduce to a low boil for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. It's worth the time because they are the best oatmeal in my opinion. Yes, keeps me full too. I mash a piece of banana in with my serving.

Topic: RE: What could have happend?
It happens with all kinds of surgeries. Some people don't respond well to general anesthesia. My heart goes out to her.
I don't understand the people who do not  follow the surgeon's instructions and have their surgeries cancelled. The case before me was cancelled because she stopped and got a Starbuck's coffee on the way to the hospital. Who does that going into major surgery??? It was good for me because it bumped me up to the first case of the day.

Topic: RE: OMG! Please I need major help with vitamins.

I see I'm in good company. I have Bariatric Advantage chewable multi vit and calcium. I can get the multi vits down but I'm starting to have a hard time with the Calcium. 3 huge chewable pills a day. I have now crushed them and mixed with applesauce and they have gone down easier but there's so much of it that it's like eating a whole meal. A vitamin meal. It hasn't made me nauseous yet but I'm getting close. Another member had recommended Upcal D (calcium), a powder you mix with water and ENS-Celebrate (multi) also mixed with water. I am going to try them out.
Speaking of protein shakes......I use Unjury......20Gm/scoop. I use a double scoop so that I'm getting 40Gm/shake. I drink 2 a day and with that alone I'm getting in my targeted protein goal of 70-90 Gm/day at this stage of the game.

Topic: RE: Can I hurt myself sleeping on my side?
No, you didn't mess anything up...............................I'm a side sleeper too. Very little problems myself post op. Have the same experience with sleeping. Still do some nights but it's getting better. My right side is the most tender still. It's the biggest incision I have and the one where the cutting instruments were used. When I sleep on my right side I also prop a pillow under the stomach and one behind my back for support. It works pretty well.

Sorry....no NSAID's for us. Tylenol is your best friend.

Topic: RE: Liver Reduction Diet?
It apparently does reduce the size of your liver. Besides 3 protein shakes /day I was able to eat all clear liquids and full liquids. If I needed to chew I could eat low carb veggies and during my 2 week pre op period I could have 3 oz. of chicken/turkey or fish once each week. I lost 9# on the 2 week pre op diet. Having said that, each surgeon has their own pre op diet so you'd best follow what you've been instructed to do.

Topic: RE: Indigestion in my old stomach???
My surgeon has us take Prilosec or Prevacid twice daily as a preventative measure against getting ulcers. Do you take any of these or other such antiacid meds? They do work systemically so they should also be working on your old stomach. I would certainly run this by your MD as you wouldn't want this to get out of hand.

Topic: RE: A month away from surgery, horrible cravings!!
I didn't have any particular cravings but I did make a "BUCKET LIST" of foods I wanted to eat before I had the surgery.

Topic: RE: Water, vitamins and food oh my!!!
Chewable vitamins aren't that much better. By the time you chew them all up it feels like you've filled up your pouch and eaten a whole meal. I've even started crushing them and mixing with applesauce and eating them that way.
I'm 17 days out and can now eat 1-2 ounces of pureed food at a time. First week post op I had all liquids, then 3 weeks of pureed and then will be on to soft foods starting week 5.  I drink 2 protein skakes a day (each has a double scoop of protin powder so there's 40 GM in each shake). Right now my goal is 70-90 GM of protein/day and at least 64 ounces of fluids. The protein is easy but the fluids are not. I am gradually working my way up to 64 ounces. I just keep sipping away all day long.

Topic: RE: Reminder about calcium
Thanks for the reminder Kelly. I got the chewables from Bariatric Advantage. They are huge. I've stopped chewing them. I crush them and mix with applesauce because it seems to go down easier that way  but it's like eating half a meal. (I'm 12 days out.) I think I'll look into the Upcal D. Thanks for the tip.
