Topic: RE: Massage

i have been going to massage therapy school for the last 3 months, in order to graduate i have to give 325 massages, i have given 80 as of today....

make sure your massage therapist knows about your surgery...the only problem i could possible fore see is, you may not be able to lay on your stomach if not..then ask to have it side lines..you lay on your side like a pregnancy massage...

at my school we dont massage the stomach area anyhow..but the pressure of laying on your stomach may be a bit uncomfortable....but like i said you can have it side lined....good luck and keep us posted...

have a great weekend

Topic: RE: OT - Looks like I have to have back surgery

I have a very large herniated disc L-5, S-1, AND it has elongated down my spinal column, they wanted to do surgery to snip it off....hummm the words, surgery, snip, spinal column...just did not set well with me...i was in so much pain, i could not sit, stand, lay down, walk...wasnt getting more than 2-3 hours of sleep with out looking for some kind of pain pill or relief of some kind....at the time i was just using tylenol, motrin and a sciatic pain from the health food store...this was all pre op...now i could see how people could accidental overdose on pain pills after all of that....

i did end up having 2 nerve block injections....i was scheduled for 6, after the first one, i really did not need the 2nd one, but still had it done to just make sure things were good...did not go back..was totally fine...this has been 4-5 years now and still ok...yes i still have the bad back and bending over and coming back up like picking something up off the floor, i notice my back..but it is better, i have lost about 100 pounds after surgery..i still watch how i do certain things to help protect my back...but i no longer have that burning, searing hot knife thru butter type of pain down the bum and right thigh and down to my little pinky toe...my little pinky toe was even numb for a time being.....

the injections were not that bad..first one i kinda psychaed myself out for it..the 2nd one, it seemed to have stung more than the first one....but i think i also had a pill before hand as i had to be drivien home from the first one, but not the 2nd one...it felt something like a couple of bee stings in the back side of the lower back...they used an xray to help get the injection to the right spot...

good luck, hope this helped in some way...

Topic: RE: How come ?? This makes NO sense to me !!!

i would definitely get the discs checked out..i have a very large herniated disc, L-5, S-1, and it has also elongated down the spinal column...drs wanted to do surgery on it inside the spinal column....umm no thank you.... and that was one of the main reasons to do the bypass to get the weight and stress of my lower back....

i did get 2 nerve block injections also..i was scheduled for 6, but only had to get 2...i also went to my chiro quite a bit and got adjusted and his thearpy..i also got a TENS unit to use at home.....

and now i am going to massage therapy school and i would highly recommend getting a massage...it has worked WONDERS for  my back..my school offers massages on public by a student for just 20.00 not too bad..i have to give 325 to graduate from school....im at 44 as of last nights school....but i would get with a chiro and a massage and see if that helps in some way..

Topic: RE: way OT, but need some anatomy help for school

I have been going to massage therapy school for the last couple of months, and this anatomy class is going to kick my butt....i have a home work assignment if there is someone that is great with anatomy perhaps you could help...the assignment is, starting at the heel (calcaneus) and i have to jump from bone to bone VIA mucles...i have to go up the back side to head, then back down the front side.... using the orgins and insertions.....

here is the first one that we have....

calcaneus to femur VIA gastrochemus

insertion-calcaneus, origin- laterial epicondyle of femur

that is the first jump...i could sure use some help on this....as this is such a forgein language to me with all the medical terms. i am sure i am making this harder than it has to be....so perhaps private message me if you have a easier way to thinkg about this...

thanks so much, and have a great day

Topic: RE: How long did it take you to be able to sleep on your side/stomach?

try getting a couple of body pillows one for each side....i have them now, i am a back sleeper, but yet a side sleeper...i put the body pillow under one hip and so one hip is kinda raised but not totally on the side...so, pillow under right hip, im leaning towards the left a bit, but not all the way...then i adjust the weight or hips and place body pillow under left hip and weight is on the right hip kinds...just not totally on the side yet....i slept that way while preg, and just kept doing that..i have a pillow for under my knees also....i have the side sleeper pro pillow for under the neck and that has been great...my husband snoring has lessed alot since we got those pillows...they look like a candy cane and it has a spot for your ear to go in....i wish they were memory foam but that would be way more money..i got mine from WOOT, as wal mart is like 20.00 but WOOT had them on sale..2 for 10.00 so we stocked up on them, have them in the closet...pillows dont last long at my house...

my bed is full of pillows, we leave them in their spots when we make the bed....

also try putting your head up more than the rest of your body while on your back....knees up and head up while on back...i sleep kinda in a V but with the pillow under the hip.....but i also have an adjustable bed....

good luck, and just keep trying different variations of sleeping on your bac****il you can get more comfy..

Topic: RE: Need the non-single-digit-clothing-size folks to make themselves known

hey after loosing 110 pounds im still sporting a 42DDD bra....down from a 46/48DDD they look like deflated beach balls...they headed south oh so many years ago...

i am still in a size 16/18 depends on the brand name of the clothes....i was in a 26/28 before surgery....i never intended to have this surgery to get down to a certain size..i just wanted to get the strain off my lower back due to a very large herniated disc         (L-5,S-1)area of the body...i wanted off all the medications i was taking for high blood pressure, diabetes...i had acid flux, and they fixed a hernia during surgery...so i have met all those goals just not down to a very small size, but i am more healthy now than i have been in years...i am way more active than i can ever beleive..i am going to massage thearpy school full time, i still have time for 2 line dance classes during the week, and i go out to out local moose every friday night to dance, then i work a dance once a month with more dancing...before surgery, i NEVER would have attempted any of this.....

thanks for all the help you offer on this board, clothes size and age are just numbers....but yes sometimes that internal voice can play havoc with our heads....that when you put on the music, CRANK it up so the neighbors can also hear it, and just dance yourself silly....shake what your momma gave you and prasie god that we got a little bit more to shake...and yea, some times it keeps shaking after we want it to stop..but oh well...thats life..

Topic: RE: Sore hips/outer thighs?

with the weight we carried and am now loosing, it can throw your whole body and the way you walk, out of whack....as you can over compensate as the weight comes off...i  would check in with a chiropractor if you have insurance that covers that....my insurance does not cover it, but i found one that i really like and he has a decent charge for a self pay...and i get alot as i have gone to him for years....

but for the last 2-3 months i have been going to massage therapy school and boy have i been learning ALOT, and i would suggest getting a massage....if you get one that is into a therapeutic  massage, will work on that area of concern..if you get one that is more of a Swedish relaxation massage...they will slightly work on that area...but not like if they more of the thearapeutic...and yes there is a difference...check to see if you have a massage school in your area....my school just charges $20.00 for an hour massage to the general public, with a massage student...in fact i have given 26 out of the 325 i need to graduate...

but yes i would get it checked out, as it can just keep getting worse if you ignore it totally...

good luck, have a blessed day

Topic: RE: The dreaded swimsuit season...

mine are the upper inner thighs...i have had skirts on my suits for years, and will always have them....i do have a pair of pants that have holes all the way thru them and all over the pants......they are very loose so that could maybe go over a reg suit....but would be hard to swim in them or get in the water..so a skirt it is....good luck

Topic: RE: The dreaded swimsuit season...

i also shop at wal mart, but if your trying to hide thighs like mine,,then a skirt type is a must....and i agree with the rouching in the front...hids a multiple of sins....but my thighs r what i want to hide the most....

good luck..and i agree, i have to try them on first..and many different ones

Topic: RE: Possible TMI - lady troubles, possibly looking at more surgery

i pretty much had the same things going on...didnt have periods for many, many years..thought i had gone thru menopause at an early age....then one day a period started and was just so heavy, i too was using 2 over night pads together and sitting on a towel in case i sneezed or coughed....and if i did, then i had to just strip off in the shower and start all over, it was that bad...and the clots were just huge and alot of them..after about 6 weeks i went to dr and said ya gotta stop this thing...i ended up doing ultra sounds and vaginal ultra sounds and then had a DNC, and then a year later had another one...my lining had gotten so thick that it takes 2 times to get it done....they also did a biopsy of the lining when they scrapped it out....theprocedure was not all the bad....either of them....i wasl also put on birth control in order to have a period each month, and they started out heavey but they tapered off and got lighter and lighter..

now since surgery, i have had the mirena inserted and have not really had anything much of anything once again...but since i did not have periods for so many years while much younger i have ALOT of eggs hanging around...and my OBGYN said i could be a very fertile mertal...but with all the other testing i also have a huge cyst on my left ovary so they are thinking that may have to come out..but that is for another day, its been hanging around for about 6 years now, and i am in school so will have to wait till im done as i can not miss classes...

good luck on what you choose to do...but the actual DNC was not all the bad..i have 2 of them a year a part...

Topic: RE: When did you....

i have this  just a couple of times.. but i have made it from scratch, not from a box....i use plain greek yogurt, i grate my cheese..so at least it has a little bit more protein than the box kind....i also have used whole wheat pasta, quinoa pasta..so that ups the protein a bit too..

its not the best for us..but some times you just get a craving..so when that happens, i try to swap out things and make it as healthy as i can....i dont make it alot, but it does help with the cravings some times...

Topic: RE: Chickfila

their lemonade is GREAT.i get it all the time when i go there...it is made with real fresh squeezed lemons and is a bit tart..but i like it that way....they have a great fruit cup of fresh fruit too.....i like the nuggets...i dont get there very often as it is a bit of  a drive..but when i am close, i go get the lemonade and take one home...to have at home...one time i let it go in the fridge as i forgot it was there, it got pushed to the back and when i did take it out...it had gotten a bit fermitted....

all you can do is try and see how they work for you....

Topic: RE: Catalyst for my dizziness?

yep, i agree with Lora..google ear crystals....i never heard of them until a friend mentioned them to me....i asked my chiro after i had researched them online....and he had me do some spcieals type of things on his table....and man oh man...what a dizzy feeling while doing them..you have to do them in order..but it made a difference..i still get motion sickness when i do too many turns while dancing...but i feel alot more grounded now....

but check them out....i was quite shocked when i read about myself on line...

Topic: RE: RNY and TMJ

i clench my teeth very bad at night...my dentist long ago made me a night guard..i bit thru it...i had to do some therapy to get my tongue to rest at the top of my  mouth instead at the bottom of my mouth....i did not even realize that my tongue did that...the first time i had to put my tongue on the top roof o my mouth it gagged me..go figure..dentist called it a lazy tongue...who me?? not me!! but anyhow it would put alot of pressure on the TMJ area where you have that pain...

he gave me an exercise to do to release that pressure....might be hard to explain in writing..much easier to show...

open your jaw just a little, relax it..take your thumb and  place on groove of your chin under your lip...apply gentle pressure doing downward while you are pressing up with your jaw....thumb pushes down while jaw presses up....gentle pressure both ways...then thumb under chin and again same, gentle pressure of opposite directions...thumb pushes up while jaw pushes down.......now thumb on left side of jaw..again same thing...press against...then thumb on right side of jaw.. again same gentle pressure against each other...your jaw will push down, then up, then left, then right....while your thumb or fingers push the opposite direction...it really does help with that area from TMJ.. i do this several times a day....you just hold that slight pressure for a count of maybe 3-5 if that....

i showed this to my massage teacher and he was surprised  that my dentist showed me that..but that was like 18-20  years ago while living in montana...

it really does help...i hope the written directions are clear...it is much easier to show than to write how to do it.. if not, send me a message and i will try again to write it...

have a blessed day...debby

Topic: RE: Needing suggestions for straw like hair

i have used this mixture at home...1 egg, beaten, large scoop  (tablespoon maybe) of real mayo, and some olive oil...mix to a runny glue maybe.... so it dos not run in your face....just play with it a litle...i rub this in with my hands so it has to be thick enought to stay hands..apply to hair and then wrap in saran wrap, place hot towel around head...leave in as long as you can..

like if your going to be home all day long, apply in morning, then shower a night shower and shampoo hair...i have oily hair and this works great for mie....i sometimes use a vinegar/water rinse after shampooing....

god luck, have a blessed day debby

Topic: RE: once in a while foods

i have found what kinda works for me....when i am going to have some thing that i really should not be having....something that is not that good for me....i made a rule....i have to open the package, take out what i want, and hold that in one hand and then re-close that same item i just took food out of while holding the said food...

so for instance....chips...open package, take out handful of chips, hold chips in one hand and re close that same package....then i walk away and get to have my treat....have you tried to close a ziplock baggie with one hand holding some thing in theother?? its not that easy....and a handfull of something is much better than the whole bag of that same something...

now this may not work with trigger foods....but so far this has been working for me.. and i have made it in my mind that i only get 2 handfuls of that treat  in the day...so that helps some too....if you go back 3,4,5,6 times and even manage to close package kind of defeats the rule....breads were my all time favorites...any and all kinds of breads...so i have been making mini muffins of pumpkin bread and carrot cake and i only get 2 of the mini muffins....no frosting on the carrot cake....and my carrot cake i have made with whole wheat flour, almond flour, oat flour, flax seeds, honey, molasis, and just a tad bit of raw sugar, and truvia/stevia blend.....and so far this carrot cake has been able to stand alone with out the cream cheese frosting...

anyhow..just a thought on how i have managed to eat the  not so often foods...

Topic: RE: Warning... TMI.. Horrible diarrhea

look at the ingredients of what you are drinking, like for instance, crystal light...if you drinkiing the sugar free, it could contain sorbitol, that is a laxative...most surgar free items contain this, the surgar free puddings have asparteme and soribtol in them...

and yes you could be lactose intollerant.....but check your ingredients on what you are drinking..

Topic: RE: Easter Holiday

if your going to attempt this trip..then plan to stop every 2-3 hours max to get out and walk and stretch...blood clots can happen very quickly after major surgery like this...and if yours is open and not  lapriscopy..then you may be on pain pills longer than you think you will....you may have some comlications afterwards...there are many that do...but also just as many that dont have any problems at all...

a friend and i had same surgery, same dr.... she was about 2-3 weeks behind me.....she spent the first 3 months or so throwing up 2-3 times a day...i have not thrown up once..only had a couple of quesy spells...so you just never know how you will feel or if there are any complications....but if you are still on pain pills, please do not drive.....

Topic: RE: Pizza

when you melt them, the cheese melts and makes them so you can pick them up and eat them...but i have used pineapple in mine and for some reason it does not melt the same so i eat it with a fork....but my hubby picks them up and eats them, dunks them in pizza sauce....they are not hard like a potato chip..but more like a hummm..kinda like a flour taco shell......but not really...but they are not hard like a tater chip..if that is what you are asking....we like them a bit crispy around the edges.. just a tad shy of burnt...dark brown...around the edges...

just try them and see how your family likes them....they are good cold the next day too..but not if you dont like cold pizza.....but go easy on the seasonings.. as they can make or break this receipe..found out the hard way...for a large gallon ziplock baggie full of stuff..i put maybe  teaspoon of each one...

Topic: RE: Pizza

if we order pizza at home it is always now thin crust..i can eat maybe 1-2 small squares of this...we ususally get the meat lovers or i totally splurge and get some ham/pinapple...my all time favorite...i ususally get this on half pizza and my daughter gets her fav on the other half..

if we are at home.. we make pizza chips...i take the favorite toppings, usually meat lovers type, pepperoni, turkey pepperoni, sausage, ham etc. all chopped up pretty fine....then add cheeses..parm, mozz,, cheddar, i have even used some fiesta cheese... i also add in small amounts of italian seasoning, garlic powder, orgeano, and go easy on these..once i added too much and not so good...mix this all together.. i keep in a large ziplock baggie...spray a cookie sheet with some parchment paper on it...then place globs of this mixture on it and melt in oven...we like to dunk it in some pizza sauce...we like the edges a bit crispy..this baggie of mixture will last about a week or so in fridge.i just take out what we want for the night....we dont eat this alot often..but when i make a baggie, i try to use it up in the weeks times...so its alot for the week..but then we dont make it for along time...my hubby even asks for this sometimes instead of ordering pizza
