Topic: RE: Do you get acne during a weightloss?
YES! It's crazy, and I hate it. There are antibiotics you can take if it's regularly out of control. I hate those more than I hate my acne, so I just deal with it, but I'm a big believer in scrubs now
Right after surgery it wasn't super bad for me either; I assumed my body was still full of other stuff too ... but these days I'll know when I'm about to have a big drop in weight because my face or chest will break out Stupid hormones.

Doctor said the fat's gotta go somewhere

Topic: RE: Beer
Carbonation doesn't bother me and I'm six months out - i drink an occasional soda. I will say I had a sip of beer at a ****tail mixer for work a few weeks back and it was awful. Tastes had totally changed. That said, it didn't affect my stomach at all and it didn't go down hard. You may be fine with anything.
That said, it goes straight to your head, and it's empty calories, so you'll have to decide if it's worth it. I drank a bit of wine and a couple of cosmos over the last month and other than it hitting me harder than it did pre-surgery, I've decided it wasn't worth the calories and have given it up. Plus the whole not eating and drinking thing puts a big hamper on it
Earlier out, I was more sensitive to carbonation, so I'd certainly recommend a small sip first to see how you do, if you decide to give it a go.

Topic: RE: OT Poll - do you speak any languages besides English?
Too funny! When I was actively interpreting, I used to dream in sign alllllll the time. It was just second habit. I haven't interpreted in a few years, but I'm still fluent enough to hold conversations and used it with both my children. I haven't dreamed in it in a while though.

That's awesome! Isn't it funny - i was looking at my muffin top vs. the super blob that used to be there and thinking the same thing

Good job! What a fun NSV for sure!

Topic: RE: 1200 Calories including your protein drinks
I use myfitnesspal to track calories and protein counts. I track my sugars and carbs as well, but I really don't pay attention to those. Normally I target 900 calories on non-workout days and 1200 on days I run (which has been 3-4 days a week). However, at my 6 month check up, my doctor said that I could increase up to 1200. Since my weight loss has been pretty slow these last few months, I may increase it just to see if that will kick my metabolism (what little i have) into doing something

Topic: RE: Meauring Food?
I absolutely would. Sometimes you'll feel like you can eat more than that because the nerves are cut. Sometimes you won't. I just measure it out, eat until I'm full or it's gone.

Topic: RE: Still hungry
I don't know how far out, but those first few weeks are just plain tough.  My hunger came back pretty darn quick, so I'd eat just small bits at a time.  Fortunately, my plan didn't have us on a liquid diet for long, and once I got solid food in me, it certainly helped.

Try not drinking immediately after your shake.  It may work, it may not, but hey - it's worth a shot, right? :)  Also, if you're making your shakes with water, if you can, try it with milk.  I think it makes them thicker and sticks with me longer.

Keep drinking - I can easily get in 80-100 ounces on "big pouch days" - the days I think my pouch could hold a tank.  That seems to help me ... especially if you can mix it up with SF Kool-Aid, tea, etc.

And all else failing, just remember it gets better!  You're shrinking and as time progresses and you can eat more and different things, it gets easier :)

Good luck to you!!

Topic: RE: Still hungry
How many calories are you taking in? Are you on a liquid only diet?

Also, have you tried drinking your protein drink, and then waiting an hour or an hour and a half before drinking water or other fluids? I know it sounds crazy, but I swear I get hungry earlier if I start drinking right after I finish my protein drink. It may be in my head .. but it works, so I go with it

Topic: RE: Which Flavor/Brand HUMMUS is the BEST for us???
I'm lazy, so I get the Hannah's organic singles at Costco. It's 60 calories per serving, which is a half of a single cup. I dip my carrots in it, and then close it back up and eat the rest for a snack later with more carrots. It's only 2g protein per 2TBS, so I eat my protein first, and eat the carrots and hummus later, but it's a fun snack, and I like it better than ranch.

I could totally put it on lunchmeat wraps too - that'd be tasty - and I like the idea of dipping cheese in it!

Topic: RE: 8 weeks out and slow weight loss
I lost 28.5 pounds the first two months. You're not slow, and two weeks without any weight loss isn't anything to fret about Your body is still healing and adjusting.

Keep following your dietary guidelines, drinking your fluids and taking your vitamins. It will come off!

I had the worst stomach issues with it!  I started taking probiotics with them and it helped, but didn't solve all my problems.  Thank goodness it was only for 10 days!

I was on Flagyl and Cipro for a colon infection a few months ago.  It seemed to work well for me as well.

Odd what different doctors will do or not do!

Topic: RE: Just call me, Starvin Marvin.
At two weeks, you're still healing, so don't beat yourself up too much. Yes, you should walk, but it doesn't have to be a marathon

I saw the pictures of my pouch, but I'm tellin' ya, this thing can hold a battleship. I swear. I had nausea problems, but my pouch is steel. I can hold a ton, and the only thing it dislikes is apples.

I had stomach hunger right out - actual hunger, not head hunger, so you're not alone. I wasn't craving things or eating because it smelled good or whatever, it was because it'd been a few hours since I'd eaten, and I was hungry! It'd growl and make all kinds of crazy noises before and after I'd eat. I have a very vocal pouch

Stick with it! I'm four months out, and 55 pounds down.

Topic: RE: Do you think I should call my surgeons office?
I was horribly nauseas my first two months. It was terrible. Then somewhere around .. ten to eleven weeks out, I was fine.

The dry heaves came back when I changed my calcium to the Costco generic brand. They do not like to be taken on an empty stomach. Ever.

Tea on an empty stomach will still get me, so no tea for me.

I'd call your doctor as well - they can prescribe anti-nausea meds!

Topic: RE: OFF TOPIC - Seeking advice from moms & or Dads
I love the Vick's plug-ins. I put two little vapor thingies in the plug-in, plug-it in somewhere where it'll fill up the room and call it good. I also prop their heads up with a second small pillow or even a small towel under the pillow.

I use a humidifier as well sometimes, but I don't tend to see a difference in my kids .. but people swear by them.

I also use honey-based cough syrups, or even just a teaspoon of honey. My kids are also on allergy meds - we like Claritin, but I've used Zyrtec as well.

+1 on the compression gear. I have under armor gear myself, but i've heard the Old Navy or even Target brand compression gear works great. I wear both a shirt and compression or tighter capris and then wear a looser shirt over. It keeps all my extra skin and flab where it belongs

Topic: RE: Labs - Elevated Liver Enzymes AFT & ALT?
Mine were elevated too. My surgeon says that the elevation is completely normal at this stage of weight loss, and he wouldn't normally check them until six months out anyway.

Topic: RE: 7-months postop and I'm disappointed I'm don't have more energy
I'm just shy of five months out, but I am ALWAYS tired. Always. My husband let me sleep in last weekend, and I stayed in bed until 11, and I could have taken a nap. It's horribly frustrating.

I had a sleep study done, and while I don't have apnea, I never went into REM sleep because I woke up so many times. They gave me Mirapex for RLS, and that helped some, but I don't always take it because of the side effects. I have a prescription for Ambien and I've been debating starting that up.

If I took both of them, perhaps I'd get good quality sleep. That's what I'm missing. I get tired of popping all the pills all day long, so I've generally avoided these and I was hoping as the weight dropped, I'd get some energy. However, after reading this thread, I'm thinking perhaps I should try taking the pills regularly and see what I think then

Good luck! Hopefully the sleep study is enlightening!

Topic: RE: Gym wear!
I got my absolute favorite sports bra ever from Lane Bryant's website. It's their padded underwire one. No chafing, no movement. Love it.

I'm also a huge fan of compression wear now, since I was recommended it on the exercise forum. I got a pair of compression pants from Ross, and those work great, but I splurged on the compression top because of my excess skin on the belly and bought some Under Armor shirts. LOVE it. Totally worth it. It's comfy too - so it's tight, but I don't feel like it's going to go anywhere.

These are fun and actually fairly easy to make, just slightly time consuming.  We have a lot of hispanic markets around here, so the corn and cal is easy to find:

However this one?  WAY stinkin easier :)

Topic: RE: No Flinstone vitamins?????
Some surgeons recommend them - they're easy to find and easy to chew. However, with as much as we malabsorb, there's a lot that the flinstones don't have in them that you'll miss.

That said, a co-worker of mine takes adult gummies and her labs come back just fine every time.

I settled on the Celebrate capsules because I hate chewables

Something is better than nothing for sure. However, if you can stomach an adult multivitamin chewable, you might be a bit better off. However, I'm not one to go against what your surgeon says.

I'd make sure you're supplementing with a Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and of course your calcium as well as your flinstones.

My two cents

Topic: RE: Difficulty losing weight
As long as you're following the program, you'll lose weight - but some lose it slower than others.

I know for me, my weight fluctuates quite a bit, and you may just be hitting a bit of a stall. Your body has to adjust to the fact that it's losing weight. I'll stay at the same weight for a couple weeks, then drop fairly rapidly, then do the same thing - it's kind of like a stair step if you look at my weight loss.

There are some people that will recommend that you toss the scale and weigh only once a week or once a month or only at doctor visits. I'm neurotic, so I weigh daily, but I don't let it upset me when the scale goes up or doesn't move. I just keep moving and eating my protein.

Depending on how much your exercising, you may want to make sure you're getting enough calories as well. Some times playing with your calories can help the scale move.

Good luck!

Topic: RE: Nurse called Friday
I was also told that rapid weight loss can contribute to high liver enzymes. If you've lost a reasonable amount of weight in a short period of time on your pre-op diet, that can contribute to it. You will continue to see that in your post-op tests as well.

Good luck with your surgery!

Topic: RE: Need help, what do your daily meals typically look like ?
I usually get around 90g of protein, but I don't eat a lot of fruits or veggies - it's all protein. It's bad - I need to figure something out.

Anyway:

Breakfast around 8 is a protein shake.
Noon is 3oz turkey with a thin slice of cheese and mustard
around 3 I'll do a protein bar or one of Shelly's 5 minute cakes (worldaccordingtoeggface)
Dinner is another 3oz protein and occasionally a veggie and that's around 6ish.

Lately I've been pretty hungry at bedtime so I'll add a protein cake or a protein bar as a snack before bed.
