CPAP and Sleep Apnea

I had VSG surgery July 29, 2013.  I had my CPAP pressure lowered last month and now it feels too strong again. Has anyone with sleep apnea had another sleep study prior to reaching their goal? I thought I would wait until reaching goal but since it seems so strong now I'm second guessing and thinking it might be worth it to go now. Thoughts or experiences to share?

Hello,

I have lost 161 pounds so I had a new sleep study. I went from not breathing 136 times an hour to 18 times. He said if I get it down to between 5 to 10 no more CPAP. Anyways what he did was order me new cpap that actually senses what pressure I need that way as I lose it will adjust itself. We agreed that when I get down to 250 (I am 6 feet tall) he will do another study.

Thanks for sharing!  I guess I should probably make another appointment with my doctor and see if she suggests doing the same.  I'd love to eliminate my CPAP!  It was a like miracle when I got it because I was so exhausted I was even having trouble making it to work on time and I have a 2 1/2 hour flexible window on when I can arrive.  But, of course, it would be even better not to deal with it at all.  My doctor had talked about ordering a APAP (automatic) but my insurance doesn't cover it until Feb or Mar 2014, after my existing CPAP is old enough.

Thanks again!

Yeah from what I was told they will replace them after five years. My insurance will pay I believe up to 2500 max for equipment. I found my own doctor and referred myself because my PCP would not listen to me when I said I needed a new sleep study. I can do that with my insurance.

Thanks.  I think I can do the same thing as far as referring myself.  So far my PCP seems to be open to doing whatever I feel I would like to do.  I was thinking originally I would just wait until goal to have another study but maybe I need one now.  I'm less than 10 lbs from my surgeons goal but I really would like to be midway in the normal BMI for my height which would be less than 20 lbs now.  Maybe I'm close enough.  I'd rather not have to spend more money on CPAP and supplies if they aren't needed.  Fingers crossed!

I have hit a stall for several months :( and been to surgeon and pcp. My PCP did tons of blood tests to see if he could find the culprit. Everything was normal so he sent me to a sleep specialist. He sent me for another sleep study. Turns out that sleep apnea was the culprit and now my pressure is adjusted and I am back on the losing road.

Some people need the CPAP even after a weight loss.  Weight loss does not always "cure" sleep apnea.  It would be best to lose all of the weight and then go for another test.  They can either tell you that you don't need it or they can change the pressure if that's best.
