Sleep Apnea and Morphine

If you have sleep apnea ask your doctor how (s)he plans to accomodate your condition following surgery. Share the plan with a family member who will be at the hospital and tell them to insist that the plan be followed. As I now understand it, there are risks associated with giving a sleep apnea patient morphine. With proper monitoring, my understanding is that the risks can be avoided. But be informed. If the plan is to put you in ICU following the surgery, ask what will happen if there is no bed in ICU. Sometimes hospitals make decisions based on "available resources", so know in advance what the backup plan will be.
