So, since my surgery, I've had diarrhea nearly everyday. I figured this was normal since I wasn't on solid food. Liquid in... right. Well, during my 1st post-op appointment, my MD told me that I'd propbably developed lactose intollerance. Therefore, all the milk I've been drinking in an effort to get my proteins in has been the cause. (Though, I had the same problem when I was drinking all that nasty whey protein, so maybe I'm allergic/intolerant of that as well.)

I never had a problem with milk before my surgery. While I'm not looking forward to paying for more expensive soy or lactaid milk, it's a small price to pay for losing 34 lbs in a month.

Anyway, I wonder what other foods I won't be able to eat because of intolerance. My boss, who had the surgery about three years ago, can no longer eat ground beef. I'd hate that. I would like to think I will still be able to have the occasional (smaller) burger in the future.

Did anyone here develop an intolerance to a (semi-healthy if cooked in the right way) old favorite food?

Avocados make me really sick now.  I get dumping feelings from them.  I will not be trying them again for a VERY long time...

Bread, crackers, flatbread, etc make me feel icky, so I avoid them now.

Fortunately, I'm ok avoiding the items that I don't tolerate well, so I'm not too sad about it.

Currently 5.5 lbs below dream weight, 34.5 lbs under doctor's goal.

Whey is milk-based, so you might very well be lactose intolerant and whey intolerant as well.

What is today may not be what is tomorrow.  Things that you can't tolerate now might be okay in a few weeks or months, and vice versa.  All you can do is try it, see what happens, and move on from there.

Having said that, no, there isn't anything that I can't eat.  Chicken, beef, turkey, pork, seafood, spicy, bland, fatty, lean, fibrous, gooey, etc.  It's all gone down (and stayed down) just fine.

I am almost 2 months out and so far the only thing that bugs me is meat that is really dry - like overcooked from re-heating too many times. As a sleever I re-heat a lot! Also I can't yet tolerate spicy mustards/sauces. Burn baby burn LOL That being said I still haven't had raw fruits/veggies - that comes next week. I might be singing a different tune then...keep trucking along - hopefully the milk intolerance is only temporary unitl you heal. Good luck!

I've only been able to have meat for a couple of days and I've been really careful to not let it get too dry. I put a little dollop of cream of chicken soup in with my chicken breast and it seems to work pretty well.

Cream of chicken soup probably has milk in it also.
Good Luck on your journey.

Anything I eat that is too high in fat makes me sooo sick.  I had a low carb, high fat dressing once with real blue cheese and I thought I was going to die.  I had the big "D" and the big  all at the same time.   Sooo not only am I low carbing it, I also have to watch any high fat meats (dark meat rotissere chicken was nearly the death of me a few weeks ago), dressings, too much cheese (tho I can tolerate about an oz), and anything with oil and butter.  Oh well, I think its a blessing in disguise and I have a feeling I will grow out of it as time goes on.

Oh, I'd hate that. In my pre-op life, I was a big fan of blue cheese dressing.

Okay... maybe that was part of the problem.

Love your avatar, by the way.

I am absolutely intolerant to whey post surgery. without a doubt. It took me a couple of weeks to figure it out. I can drink plain milk fine.

Soy... I won't scare you but I threw out $40 worth of soy. And didn't mind that I threw it out.

I ended up buying EAS Advantage Egde pre-mixed protein drinks. Yes more costly but drinkable and did not trigger my whey issues. It reads like it's casien/milk instead of whey.

If I were you I'd isolate if it's one or the other or both. Give up one for about 3 days, then reintroduce it. If you had 3 days of no problems, then it suddenly returns, you know. If your problems never go away then switch and eliminate the second culprit. Same thing, 3 days, see if it goes or not.

If that doesn't fix it, eliminate both, find an alternative protien temporarily (be it soy or other) and see if that fixes it.

At some point though, you may decide this is still a liquid in, liquid out issue. I had that until I was on mushies. But whey made it - well I'll spare you the details but lets just say there was a MARKED difference when I was taking in whey.

And at 7 weeks post, I tried a little whey again... no bueno. Same issue.

I don't mind the soy. I have tried that Silk brand and like it pretty well.

As of today, I have confirmed my MD's suspicion about the milk. Yesterday I only drank soy and Lactaid and was fine. Today I drank 12oz of milk mixed with 1/3 cup powered milk and ...oh boy!

I wonder if nectar protein would work. Have you tried that?

I've not heard of nectar protein but would be skeptical. Nectar is sweet, it sounds like it could be too sweet.

There are some others that mix - egg based or almond based. Just read it, many have a mix to get the protein. Most add whey which is why my options were so limited.

Also, soy milk, check the protein, I don't think it's enough. The soy powder, which is what I was trying to get down, doesn't mix. It was nasty. I'm not sure which you use, but if you can tolerate the soy powder, then that's a decent one to use.

Nectar is just a brand name for Syntrax Nectar - it's a whey protein.  I don't care for it, but a lot of folks swear by it.
