Day 3 pre op liquids and ready to throw in the towel...

I'm feeling absolutely awful.  I can't even function!  I don't think I can take 4 more days of this.  Starting to think maybe I should try it again on my own?  I just want to feel better.  I tried the isopure protein drinks but I almost threw up.  So I'm living on sugar free jello and chicken broth.  I am weak, tired, and nauseous, plusi have a bad headache.  Help!!

You can do it! I'm feeling the same way. I get dizzy and have a horrible headache everytime I stand up. But its only a few more day, it goes by quickly. I am having a hard time with the protien drinks, so I just mix the powder in a little of water and drink it quickly like its medicine. that way I get the protien in and it makes a huge difference.

Dont give up, it will be over before you know it!  I only have one more day, its going much faster than I thought!

Try muscle milk light 100cal I am mainly living off that hope that helps. hang in there you can do it.
My Dr. doesn't have me doing a liquid diet pre-op.  Kaiser does not reguire it.
With that said.....all you can do is give it your best.  You only have a few days to go then you will be happy it's only liquid.  (from what everyone says)  Just try to think of the big picture.....how good you are gonna feel when the weight starts to really come off.  That's what I'm looking forward to!
Good Luck and see you on the loosers side! :)

I had to do a two week diet before my surgery. I bought the lite protein shakes in a bottle at GNC. They had 25 grams of protein in each and didn't taste bad at all. However, at about day 4 I had the headaches and dizziness too, caused by lack of carbs. I also got REAL tired of everything I ate being sweet. I wanted something salty. I started eating protein like eggs, cheese, deli meat for one meal a day and that helped me a lot. I still drank the protein drinks, sugar free jello, etc. I lost 10 lbs in the 2 week period. My doctors instructions were to drink the isopure on the day before surgery. They did taste terrible. I can't imagine drinking them all of the time.

Good luck to you and hang in there. Think of what you have achieved to get to this point. A lot of people can't get where you are due to lack of insurance or can't get approved for surgery.
Best of luck with life!

Just think... it's only 4 more days, and then, the start of the rest of your life!

You can do this! From what I hear, days 2-3 are the hardest on that preop diet.

I know what you're saying I am 6 days out and I am tired of all this too and my dr insist I be on it 2 weeks post op!! I have found yougurts I can eat and puddings sugar free popsicles as well as fudgcicles Hang in there we can get through this stage and think it only gets better from here!! BTW I use shakology for my protein drink mix it up with skim milk and tastes like Nestles cocolate milk!!!
You will be jsut fine. I did the protien shakes and liquids during the day then had 3oz. piece of chicken or lean meat and a green salad or green veggie for dinner.
then just did clear liquids the last 3 days before surgery.
It made a huge difference.

Have you tried the ready to drink Isopure in the glass bottle? It comes in all different flavors like koolaid, post op I found it was the only p-drinks I could tolerate instead of the powders.

Thanks all.  I'm going to call the Dr tomorrow and see if I can modify this at all.  I'm supposed to only have clear liquids (no shakes)

i did a 3 week pre op liquid diet and it is so much harder pre op than post op.  but you'll be so glad you did it!  it'll make post op an easier transition and you will have an amazing looking liver during surgery!!  hang in there and take a minute at a time.  it's one minute closer to surgery!

Do you really have a choice?  You have to do it post op. Get your head in the game.  You are going to have to control exactly what you are eating and how for the rest of your life.
See that's what I'm afraid of! Is it going to be this bad post op? I can not feel like this and function as a mom for the next month. I just can't function!

Yes you can.  Just because you haven't before doesn't mean that you can't.  You are in the hardest part right now.  Just set your mind to it.  It's just like exercising. Tell yourself you can't fail and you won't.
You aren't going to feel like you're starving after you have surgery.  I had surgery 2 weeks ago and I'm still in the thin liquids phase, and I haven't felt hungry or had any headaches.  You have to be super vigilant about drinking enough liquids to not get dehydrated though, or you will feel awful.  You will absolutely get tired - you're having surgery and it takes a lot of energy for your body to heal itself.  But you have to be very commited to this.  After surgery, if you eat some solid food when you're supposed to be on liquids, you could rupture your stomach which would put you back in the hospital for weeks (and could even kill you).  Seriously, I have an axquaintance who ruptured her stomach TWICE because she's a compulsive eater who didn't get that issue under control before she had the procedure.  It wasn't pretty, and you do NOT want that to happen to you.  So if you feel like you might not be able to stick to the doctor's plan, don't do the surgery until you're sure.  But if you think you can, stick it out for a few more days and it will get much easier to stick to those liquids after the operation!

Try the Isopure suggested by one of the other respondents. It's a *****alky on the tongue until you get used to it, but maybe you'll like it more. Are you allowed low-carb popsicles — they helped me get through the week. It's worth hanging in and getting your body's reactions to a low carb diet over with now, before surgery. And it psychologically prepares you for the future, where you're going to train yourself to Eat to Live rather than to Live to Eat. The other respondents are correct: this diet is important to shrink your liver to markedly reduce the chance of complications. I found the pre-op diet tougher than post-op. I'm 52 years old. I lost 10 pounds before surgery, and six months out I've lost another 106 lbs and feel better than I have since first-year university. Focus on that and you can get through anything!
You HAVE to do this. You HAVE to follow what your surgeon is telling you to do. You have a choice to make. Suck it up and trust that your doctor knows what he's doing or throw in the towel and have to redo these three horrible days again when you decide to try again.

This is the worst days. Day 1 and 2 were easy. Day 3 and 4 sucked majorly. It's horrible. It sucks. I feel you. I was a whining crazy person those two days with a headache and really bad attitude.

YOU WILL BE FINE.

After surgery, it's a whole other ball game with other challenges, but this is temporary. Your body is detoxing from the carbs and food and stuff in your body. You are doing this for a reason. You MUST stick with it.

You can do this. I know you can. I did it for 2 weeks. You can do it for one week. I didn't cheat. Not once. It was hard. I was a basket case sometimes, but YOU CAN DO THIS.

Don't give up on yourself.  Are you getting enough water?  Dehydration can contribute to tiredness, nausea and headaches.  Can you tolerate Gatorade or Powerade with electrolytes?

Don't think about having to do it for four more days.  Think about doing it for the rest of today.  Tomorrow when you wake up, you only need to get through the day.

I'm on two weeks of liquid pre-op.  I did great the first week, but caved in and had a few pita chips tonight.  I just crushed the rest that were in the bag, drizzled dishwashing liquid over them and added water.  That way I know I can't eat any more of them!

I found shakes called Pure Protein that taste okay.  Find a lower sodium tomato soup if that's allowed or vegetable juice.  These not only help my body but they help my mind.

Remember, you can and you WILL succeed!

Hang in there!
