Ok so I am home (YAY) from the hospital! I stayed 3 days instead of 2 because my drain was still letting out too much liquid on day 2. Needless to say I am thrilled to finally be home and have been on a clear liquid diet in the hospital, but now have gone on to full liquids. And I am suprised to say that I am actually hungry! I didn't think I would, and the amount that I can actually take in is extremely small amounts of broth and milk but I can actually feel that hunger when it's time to "eat" (slurp) Does anyone else have this feeling so early out?

I've read about that happening, I guess it's more common than surgeons would like to let on.  From what I read, there isn't anything you can do about it, you just have to power through on the diet with the guidelines you were given.  I feel horrible for you & definately hope that I don't fall into that category when mine is done 2/16.

I didn't have any hunger during liquids, but got hungry after I started eating mushies.  I had a couple of months where I had to learn the ways and the best things to eat.  Now it's very, very manageable and appropriate.

I am 8 days out today and when on clear liquids the first 48 hours I felt no hunger - mostly nausea.  After 48 hours I was allowed to advance to full liquids including food placed in a blender and made thin enough it could go through a straw.  I will continue this for a total of 2 weeks. At one point I thought my stomach was about to growl from hunger and then I burped and the feeling went away.  I hear that stomach acid can feel like hunger.  I take Pepcid twice a day. My MD siad I would not feel "hunger" sensation for 3-4 months.....?   For the first time today, I can almost drink "normal" swallows without much discomfort.  I also did not have a gas bubble in my tummy when I first woke up for the first time since surgery.  I ate about 4 oz of jello pretty easily but today (my max has been 2 oz) I also have felt "hungry".  Usually when I drink protein drinks, I feel very "full" today I did not get that feeling.  However, I made "white chili with turkey" and bout 2 oz of that has me feeling very full and satisfied.

it usually doesn't last.  Your system still doesn't know which way is up.  Hang in there, this too shall pass.

Thanks for the replies, and also just to be clear "hungry" means I take one spoon full of broth and feel full or one sip of protien shake.. not sure how I will possibly get all mine nutrition in but hey, I got my vitamins down! your right the "hunger" might be more just the stomach acid..

I thought I felt hunger too very early on, and I still think I occassionally do feel hungry, but the stomach acid can really do a number on you and feel like hunger.  Once I realized I was suppose to be taking prilosec twice a day a lot of that feeling which I thought was hunger went away.  Worth a try anyway if you aren't taking it twice a day.

I knew that it could happen, so I was surprised when I was hungry on Day 1. Was I happy? No but it just means that I'm going to have to fight head hunger & physical hunger. It sucks but it gets easier as the weeks go on. Good luck!

my hunger is not like a pain just that i do not feel full by the water or broth. i consumer alot of brooth last night but i sip over the coarse of an hour. i am not sure if i should try and drink my chamomile or brooth faster and see if that makes me feel full. the boost does make my stomach feel alittle different then the clear liquids do i don't know though these boosts are so very high in fat and only 14 g of protien for 8 oz.

I was hu8ngry in the hosp. as soon as I stopped thrpowing up. I still have hunger, but am easily satisfied with a small amout of food.
It is NOT acid for me. You may have some acid. Are you taking a PPI??
It is not uncommon to still have hunger after this surgery. Grelhin is found in many other places in our bodies.
Hang in there.

Hey Jule,

I had my surgery same day as you. I think im feeling hungry, but I think alot of it is the gas still inside and because of the acid.
