So.... I keep reading people saying they eat less than 1000 calories a day... sometimes as low as 600. Is that how it is forever after sleeve? I am very busy with 2 kids and a full time job. Seem like that isn'e enough.

I mean, I am not expecting to eat 2000 calories or anything, but perhaps 1000-1200?

Thoughts?

1,000-1,200 is a maintenance calorie zone. Weight loss zone is 600-800. The majority of people stall out or lose a lot more slowly by exceeding 800 calories. If you are a weight lifter/marathon runner, you could get away with going over 1,000 calories and still achieve in a fair amount of time. If you eat what you are supposed to (dense protein), you will not have a lot of room for much else (what ends up being high in calories/carbs). Protein is generally low in calorie, which makes staying in the 600 range very easy. I eat meat at every meal, can never fit in more than 3 ounces and do not have room for anything else. I hover around 700 calories a day and have lost 90 pounds in 4 months with moderate weight lifting as my exercise. I do not feel deprived or hungry.

 Yes, I rarely feel tired. The more weight you lose, the more energy you have. I take my vitamins and b12 every day, which keep me pumped up. Exercise is a great way to give you energy as well. I'm always buzzing after a workout.

 During my weight loss period I ate about 600 calories a day. It was very easy as I wasn't hungry at all. I also exercised a lot. Now that I have reached my goal I eat about 1500 calories a day. Some days it is less and some days it is more. I don't have a problem with my weight as I have been stable for quite some time and only go up or down about 1 lb. I am not as careful as I was during the weight loss phase but I do still exercise a lot  (1 hr of aerobics and 1.5 hr of Yoga 5 times a week) and try to keep the carbs low.  I have good restriction and try not to snack. I get hungry occasionally but also get full really fast. You will find what will be normal for you once you are at goal.

I couldn't believe that I was going to be surviving on such a low calorie diet day in and day out. I questioned the NUT and posted here, too.

It's my turn to assure you, yup, it's possible. As a matter of fact until about 2 weeks ago it was hard for me to meet my daily calorie minimum of 600 calories and 60-70 grams of protein without two protein shakes. I'm doing it now and average between 600 & 650 pretty much everyday.

I have plenty of energy. I work full time teaching, work with my dogs and client dogs after school groom and show dogs on the weekends and walk 3-4 days a week. I'm sleeping great, too. Tomorrow I go for my first training session at my new gym. So, yes, plenty, plenty of energy.

I honestly feel so much younger than I did 6 months ago. Too bad I don't look it! LOL!!!!!!!!

I'm only 2 weeks out and just moved into the pureed stage of my diet but I can tell you that yep it's possible to survive and thrive on 600 to 800 calories a day. I take my vitamins as I am supposed to and drink 3 protein shakes a day in addition making sure i get protein in from other stuff like greek yogurt, soups, and other foods that fill my sleeve and take care of the hungry issues. I do get sleepy during the day if I am not going to bed at a decent time or like tonight waking up at 2:30 in the morning for whatever reason but I am sure I would not need an afternoon nap if I could get my sleep routine down to a normal time lol. But then I dealt with insomnia for years before my surgery so I am kind of used to being wired for sound at 2:30 in the morning lol.

I doubt there are many people living on 600 calories a day after they reach goal.  I've heard folks being anywhere from 1000-1800 calories a day once they reach goal.  It all depends on you and your body and finding the sweet spot where you maintain (don't gain, don't lose) anymore.

Have you had surgery yet?  It would be helpful if you put your surgery date in your profile or signature so we could see.

During weightloss, I stayed in the 600-800 calorie per day range, 70-80g protein, 80-100oz water.That worked for me quite well, and it seems to be the 'optimal' range for most VSGers.

Your maintenance level for calories is goign to depend on a number of things.

-- Activity level
-- Body composition (lean vs. fat)
-- Size (i.e., being 5'3" vs. 6")
_ Gender
-- Age
-- Genetics
-- Vitamin/mineral deficiencies
-- Hormone balance

If you've done a lot of yo-yo dieting, you may have disturbed your metabolism.  Weight loss, alone, will slow your metabolism as will losing lean weight rather than fat.  The best way to combat that is exercise including resistance training.  Making sure you get adequate nutrition makes a difference, as well.  Iron deficiency, for example, slows your metabolism through several mechanisms. 

I am moving into 'maintenance" eating 1100-1200 calories a day and still losing.  I also exercise a good bit.  I've also had metabolic testing.  My 'maintenance' level for calories is close to 2,000 per day.  That's at 5'3" and 44.

 There are so many factors that affect the optimal calorie range. I just had my 6 week follow-up and have lost 60 pounds. Because I walk 4 miles a day at a brisk pace and because I work out 3 days a week with weights, my doctor wanted me to increase my calories to 1100-1200. At that amount, I'm losing about .6 pounds per day. When I drop back into the 800 calorie range, my weight loss stops. It's hard to get the 1200 calories (135-150g protein) in, but when I do, I always lose weight.
