Every Sleeve is Different.. Yours?

So I find it interesting that everyone has their own little personal sleeve details that are different.  For instance my best friend can't drink icy cold drinks anymore while I have no problem with them.  I'd love to hear what people have found about their sleeves that seems unique.  Here's some things that I found with mine:

 - I have to take a PPI daily, even after more than a year out.. a small price to pay

- I don't tolerate higher fat foods very well like bacon, cream, butter, etc.  I do better with lower fat foods, but not fat free.

- I can eat a lot more beef than chicken.

- I can eat very little chicken and get full very fast, no matter how tender.

- I seem to be able to eat more than others sleevers that had the same exact surgeon.  I try to measure to help with this.

- I no longer tolerate acidic foods.  I loved tomato sauce, lemon juice, vinegar, etc. and used to flavor my foods with this all but I can't eat any of it anymore.. it makes my reflux totally horrible.  I miss these things as I miss the tanginess of it.

- I find it easier to eat low carb with a VSG than it ever was before surgery.  I still want to eat a lot of small meals and eat pretty frequently and get hungry, but I'm satisfied with meat so much more easily than before, when I could eat a 2 pound steak in a sitting.

How about you guys?

cant eat mayo or miracle whip regular or fat free
cant handle crystal lite or other sugar free drinks
cant deal with sweets of any kind
1/2 a cup of anything is it for me i have no room for anything else.
i cant stand the smell of beef cooking much less try to eat it.
i could live strictly on venison and v-8 juice "(im still on mushies)
if i dont get enough protein in i dont lose any weight at all. but if i eat like i did last night and have at least 2 ounces of meat per meal i lose like crazy.
carb anything goes straight through me like my digestive system was a water slide.
i am ravenously hungry every 2 hours exactly from the minute i take my last bite of whatever meal i had prior.
this is what i have noticed at one month out. I am sure there will be lots of other changes too eventually.

Very interesting.  I had the ravenously hungry thing from 2 days out until I was on mushies.  When I had my first egg, OMG!  Liquids didn't fill me up and I wanted so much!  I think it will get better for you.

Well hello Surgeon-Sister!!!

I'm lucky; my sleeve is a ROCK.  I abuse it often.  To be honest though, I haven't yet tried stopping my PPI, so I don't know what will happen.  I'll find out quite soon though.

I abuse my stomach with acidic, spicy food all the time.... jalapeno stuffed olives, hot hot hot salsa, hot sauces, mmmmmmm.

I agree about low-carbing after surgery.

The kryptonite to my superman stomach though is .... dense, white fish - Mahi Mahi.  I've eaten it twice, with nothing else, and it has sunk in my stomach like a lead brick.  Ugh.  I have no issues with anything else - no other meat, and no other fish - tuna and salmon is awesome.

I've noticed recently I've started to get a little more hungry - but I don't know if that's from being further out from surgery, or the fact that I've started exercising hard recently.

You are doing so great!   I don't get hungry super often, but I DO want to eat often. :(

At just over a year out,

I do take a PPI daily, and sometimes twice a day. (did before surgery too)

I never could tolerate tomato sauces, or spicy things. Still cannot !

Can, and do drink lots of coffee with milk/or half and half.

Can and do drink really really cold water !

I can eat about 3oz of food at a time.

I barf rice.

Weird sliders for me are: Corn products.(popcorn and corn chips)

Things that should be sliders but are not: Ice cream and yogurt. (I love this about my sleeve !) I can enjoy a very small serving of ice cream, and get full on it !

When I get full, my nose runs.

I never really had to take a PPI. I guess I'm lucky in that department.
I can eat more beef than chicken too. I don't know why I thought it would be the the other way around.
I can tolerate high fat food but high sugar... Not so much.
I find it easier to eat low carb now too. And luckily, I prefer it this way (most of the time anyway...)
Like ruggie, I also abuse my sleeve with spices & hot stuff. I cannot get enough of it!
What is PPI?

I haven't found a food yet that I can't tolerate......sometimes I think that's not a good thing....

I eat all kinds of crap (spice) Kim Chee, Salsa, Wasabi, Indian food, garlic, Sriracha.

Fats....Yes.... no problem....

Drinks..... most always something super hot or super cold....

Ahhh..... Chicken....something about chicken.....chicken breast in particular....but all chicken even ground chicken is the true capacity checker. Most of the time I'm wetting down my chicken to moisten it up.

But like Ruggie stated.....some fish is a slider and some fish hits hard.....for me it's Mackerel..... Grilled or broiled.... Known in Japanese as "Saba"

1oz. of Saba feels like 2oz. of chicken and sits like a brick.... no way could I eat more for some reason. If the truth be known....this fish got me to goal. Soy Sauce, grated Diakon, wasabi......plated with a few cubes of Tofu.....and I'm good.....

PPI..... I'm still on it....I'm not sure if I still need to be on it.....I do get reflux on occasion....but less than I did pre-op.

One thing I have been doing....and you may want to try it if you haven't already.... I read it here on OH and don't remember who posted it......Take your PPI and hour before your meal.....turn the pumps off before you eat.....makes perfect sense.
If you eat first you have already triggered acid production....than you take a PPI after the fact....to late...... I think it works.....

When do people get on a PPI? Is it after surgery if you start having issues with acid reflex or is everyone supposed to take it after being sleeved?
Some folks do not "need" it for medical purposes but use it to manipulate their hunger.  So, know the pros and cons of everything before dabbling in it recreationally.  For me, I tried to see if it would stave off my hunger, because I do still get hungry, but it only kept it away for maybe an hour longer, and the cons of it (for me) outweighed just one more hour of not hungry.  Oh, or the freaking concrete gut and angry anus (helloooo constipation!).  So, just make sure you understand the good and the bad of *any* medication and how it reacts with what you are taking (supplement wise) and then make a decision that is good for you!

End of Public Service Announcement!  :}
I started having acid reflux around the time I started soft food - so maybe at 6 weeks out or soon thereafter.  My surgeon makes very small sleeves and said it's a somewhat common thing to need a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) for reflux after surgery.  I

So, not everyone needs it...but it's not uncommon to need one either!

 What is PPI?

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Proton Pump Inhibitor - there are different types of antacid type medications - PPIs are supposed to block production of acid in the stomach. Other types will help deal with it after the fact (like pepcid/tums, etc)

I think the practice of some docs is to start patients on a PPI immediately postop. Ive seen a lot of people not get them or told to take them, and then I see a lot of "OMGZZZ im 2 weeks post op and starving" - i can guarantee you that ravenous hunger is the result of acid production in the stomach.

Thanks! I will ask my doc. about getting on one! What are some PPI"s? Nexium?
Actually, I was on a PPI for several months following surgery, and still got  ranously hungry until I started mushies...

Thanks for sharing Master Frisco!  I just found out recently from my best friend the nurse that you are supposed to take the PPI on an empty stomach!  Gr.. no wonder it hasn't been working well for me.  Plus I usually drink coffee all morning long, and wash my PPI down with some.  I haven't figured how I'm going to wait so long to have my coffee after taking my PPI since I'm a coffee junkie! :(

Hmmm never thought about the correlation between my PPI and morning coffee. Maybe I need to take my PPI as soon as I get up. (well, I need to cut the coffee but until then...)

Here's the skinny on the PPI and when to take them.  All PPI's should be taken on an empty stomach.  That is in the literature but most people do not know.  It has to do with the coating on the medications.  They need the "virgin" stomach acid for breaking down the outer covering and then they dump into the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) where the absortion happens.  If you take it with food, it doesn't break down properly and then the food is being absorbed and the PPI is then competing for the "receptors" for absorption.  You, therefore, are not getting the benefit of the medication.

If you have to take your PPI after you have eaten, you need to wait at least 2 hours after you have eaten, and at least a minimum of 30 minutes before you eat (an hour is optimum).
