Straw Experiment Failure

My surgeon and NUT have always said that drinking through a straw after VSG is a really bad idea.  However, many people on this forum have said that they have no problems using a straw.  So, now that I am ten months out, I decided to give it a try as an experiment to see if it would be ok for me.  Everything else has gone so smoothly and I have not had any problems, so I thought it might be ok.  After all, it sure would be nice to be able to use a straw.  Well, one sip and I was miserable.  Luckily it only lasted for about 10 minutes.  I don't think I will be trying to use a straw again anytime soon, though.

So sorry you had issues with the straw. I was hesitant to try using a straw in the beginning because swallowing too much air would be a bad idea. I tried it 2 months post-op with no issues. I now drink my protein shakes in my Starbucks tumbler with a straw. Maybe it will get better if you try it later on? If not, not drinking from a straw is doable. Good luck!

There is air in the straw when you pull up the liquid but I exhale the air thru my nose and only swallow the liquid, if you cant do that trick between your nose and mouth before you swallow...then  yea, you cant use a straw... If you can, its just like drinking from a cup...

My surgeon only told me no for right after surgery, ive been drinking out of straws for 2 months daily, i have teeth issues and try to keep cold off them, with no issue, you just have to watch you dont swallow too much air, u can have the same issue drinking from a cup too though, good luck!

I totally agree with the other posters. I found that I suck in just as much air from a cup as I do with a straw, and have to exhale the excess air out as much as possible before swallowing. I started using a straw at 2 months out with my protein shakes, because there was too much bubbles and foam in it, and the straw helped to bypass some of it on the bottom. Anyway, the shakes are thicker than normal liquid so the straw stays full between sips, so less air gets in the straw than with thin liquids, so it worked out well for me. I do have more gurggling than normal using a straw, but that is also because I tend to drink quicker with a straw than without.

I think it is very individual- the straw is the only way I can drink comfortably, otherwise I take gulps of air (it is just how I swollow.)
I did not for about 2 weeks after surgery then saw someone who was sleeved the same day as me write something about using a straw, that day and everyday since I consume protein shakes with one(I did pre-op as well)

I also take in air when drinking from a glass or straw so I always use a CamelBak (Amazon) bottle for all my liquids. It prevents the liquid from draining out of the straw between sips so it doesn't fill up with air. I can drink tons more using the CamelBak, usually 100 oz. or more a day.

Wow, that is an awesome tip!

Whether I'm drinking straight from the cup or water bottle, or through a straw, I swallow air.  If I didn't have to deal with that, I know it would be less effort to get my fluids in.
