On The Verge Of Tears

I'm on the verge of saying that I hate I had this surgery. I know things will get better with time, but right now I feel like **** I have been nauseous all day. Everything I put in my mouth taste awful. Everything is so damn sweet. Once the sweet taste is gone I have a peroxide taste in my mouth. It's so gross. I just want to go back to being normal.

I have not been able to stand anything I drink or eat in the last 4 1/2 weeks. I can't get in the stupid protein, it all taste horrible. I sent my brother to Smoothie King to get the Gladiator Smoothie and that was the most disgusting smoothie I have ever tasted. I am trying not to get depressed, but it's so hard. I knew it was not going to be easy but I never imagined it would be this hard. I feel like all I do is whine and complain these days. I know this was the best decision for me, but right now it sucks.

I have lost 38lbs including pre-op, but what good is that if I am losing muscle?

If you literally can't tolerate anything you put in your stomach, something is wrong. Not even water stays down without icky feelings? Have your surgeon prescribe you an anti-nausea medication. It's important you get in as many nutrients as your healing sleeve will allow. As for the SK Gladiator, yes certain combos taste awful. You have to find a fruit combo that works with it. A word of caution, though, the fruit adds a lot of calories. It's fine right now, since you hardly eat anything. Later on, however, you'll need to get off that crutch. I liked the Gladiator chocolate with banana and peanut butter. I don't care for the whey taste either, but this combo was actually very good. I love it. Just wi**** wasn't so many calories so I could have it now. =)

Keep trying. Get the medicine, keep trying different things. It will get better.

Thanks Biscuit, I will look into the anti nausea medication and see if that helps at all.

Sorry your so discouraged....  can you tolerate low fat cottage cheese, you  can get plenty of  protein there alone.   Have you tried the Premier, its not like its going to win a culinary award but it gets the job done...

Pooch I have the premier chocolate and I just can't seem to stomach it. I will have to buy some fruit and try the cottage cheese again.

I wish I had something really great to say that would fix all this for you.  But all I can do is give you a virtual hug.  Your stricture and dilation have no doubt left you feeling this way.  It's got to get better and it will.  Right now, be sure to stay hydrated.  You mention losing muscle, and you might be, but before long you will get things right.  For now, focus on what you can control: stay hydrated, cry if it helps, find protein that feels better... and do your best to stay positive.

As for everything being sweet, maybe try some broth.  Also, Unjury sells chicken soup protein powder that isn't too bad.

I wish you a quick and full recovery.

The tears are in full stream. I have been fighting them back all day. I'm working on getting in the fluids and the protein. Thanks for the much needed hug.

I have been where you are now.  Yeah it sucks, but know that it will get better. I couldn't do the protein drinks either, my protein came from cottage cheese, plain greek yogurt (with hidden valley powder dip mix mixed in - not too much just to give it a little taste), refried beans (pulvarized in the food processor topped with taco bell sauce and cheese MELTED).  I couldn't handle ANYTHING sweet!!!

Another good one is the rocitta bake (I call it NO pasta manicotti)  lots of protein not sweet!

For me, it lasted about 4 to 6 months that I couldn't stand anything sweet.  Then and even now, it's not something I crave.
Thanks so much for your response. I have tried the refried beans and the ricotta bake and love both of those, but I was only able to get in about 3 bites and then I was done. I had a stricture fixed yesterday so maybe once I can get back on mushies I will be able to eat a little more to get in the protein.

Well then part of it may be some swelling still.  I would do as someone else suggested the Unjury chicken broth protein.  I wish I would have known about it when I was in the liquid stage.

Stay focused on staying hydrated no matter what you can stand to drink...just drink.

This is probably the hardest part of the journey...when you can't stand the taste of anything you CAN have.  I just had to remind myself that it will pass and it did!

I will be praying for you!
((((Hugs))))
I will thanks so much.

maybe the vets can answer this...but is it too early for a stricture??

maybe your surgeon can do an endoscopy and in the meantime...call the answering service (weekend) and tell them to have the doctor call you right away cuz you need an anti nausea med. maybe a patch for behind your ear

be sure to tell them that you havent been able to get protein in

good luck...I hope you feel better soon
MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING YOUR WATER IN...do the best you can...its important

Thanks Marabell, I had a stricture fixed yesterday. My surgeon is well aware that I have not been able to get in the protein. He is more concerned about me getting in my fluids now, but I have not been able to do that today like I thought I would be able to. I am going to give them a call about the anti nausea meds though.

First let me say I haven't had the surgery yet...so I don't know if this will help you...but I spent several weeks in the hospital two years ago...and like what you are describing everything I tried to eat...jello, chicken broth, anything...gave me this horrendous metallic taste in my mouth after eating...it was so gross...the first time it happened I actually told the nurses that I thought the chicken broth had set on the cart too long and had gone bad....omg....but the nurse God bless her after the 3rd day brought me sensitive tooth paste that had baking soda in it...and after I ate...immediately she would give me the stuff to brush my teeth with...and that really helped with that awful taste...as long as I brushed them immediately...I didn't get the horrible after-taste...she said it had to do with the baking soda...and acid in my stomach...and I don't know...but at least I could get something down...you might want to try it...I don't know if it will work for you...and I agree you should call your doc!!
Thanks so much for the help. At this point I will try anything. Do you remember the name of the tooth paste or can I buy any kind that has baking soda?

Any kind with baking soda...because I still use it...lol...I never want to feel that taste again...really I was big diet coke drinker until then...and one of my friends brought me a diet coke and I have never had one again.....lol...which is ultimately better for me...but I fear that taste...
Worth a call to the doc imo - maybe Monday morning.

I'm only guessing, but I wonder if you are in ketosis. It is harmless, but can really mess with how things taste for awhile.

Try mint tea, or any kind of tea you like. They tend to cleanse the pallate.

Sorry, I hope it gets better.

slimpikins, I have been in ketosis, although I have not checked this week as things have been so crazy. I will check on my next bathroom visit.

I will be picking up some tea tonight, along with some of the other things that have been suggested.
